Boreham Wood mean business after keeping hold of £1m man

Now, ahead of the new campaign, the club are already hitting the headlines again, having reportedly turned down a £1M offer for winger Abdul Abdulmalik from Swedish top-flight side Djurgårdens.

A surprising move to some, but turning down the money highlights the Wood's ambitions to secure promotion and make history.

Promotion push comes first for Boreham Wood

Boreham Wood have never made it to the EFL, but this year could be their best shot.

A late Rochdale equaliser and a penalty shootout defeat crushed the Wood's dreams in the play-off final, but their refusal to sell their prized asset shows they are keen for another crack at promotion.

And if promotion is the goal for Boreham Wood this season, then the club will do all it can to make it happen, and that includes keeping their star man at Meadow Park.

The winger netted 15 times in the last campaign, including a goal in the playoff final defeat.

And if Boreham Wood go up with Abdulmalik at the heart of it, no one at the club will regret turning down a record fee, because the feeling of promotion will be priceless.

The temptation of an irresistible offer for Abdulmalik

On the other hand, £1m is a massive sum for a National League side, making the rejection an extremely bold decision for the club.

It would have matched the direct sale record for a National League team, set by Fleetwood Town when they sold Jamie Vardy to Leicester City, and that turned out to be quite the deal.

But if that number starts to creep any higher, it surely has to be at least considered, as it could be a deal that provides Boreham Wood with stability for years to come.

A key issue with losing Abdulmalik is that he would need to be replaced - and quickly.

There's no doubt the fee would give them financial power, but whoever they bring in may not match Abdulmalik's ability and therefore harm their promotion goals.

With the start of the season on the horizon, Boreham Wood would likely want a replacement wrapped up swiftly so as to not risk falling behind their promotion rivals early on.
