National League cult hero makes promotion prediction ahead of new season

However, Lee Trundle, a former cult hero of the division during his time with Southport and Stalybridge Celtic, is tipping someone else for top spot.

"I know that the bookies' favourite is Carlisle, I think they finished third last year, but for me, I'm going to go for Boreham Wood.
 
"I think after last season's disappointments in the play-offs, the manager Luke Garrard has signed a new three year deal, they've rejected £750,000 as well for Abdulmalik, which you look at it, a team at National League level to reject that money for me shows that as a football club, you want to try and do something this year yourself as well as them tying the manager into a longer contract as well.
 
"For me, I think they're going to be somebody that will be right up there, and for me, I think they're going to be the champions."

Boreham Wood

Although Trundle fancies Boreham Wood to lift the National League trophy, they won't be short of challengers, and there are plenty of familiar faces in the fifth tier looking to make a name for themselves. 

One of those is Kieron Dyer, who has taken on his first managerial post at another club with lofty ambitions, Southend United.

The Shrimpers remain one of the biggest clubs in the National League, and with Dyer at the helm, the former forward believes they will be ones to watch this year. 

Adding, "If you look at Southend as well, who is a massive club at that level, they finished sixth last season.

"Obviously, you've had Kieron Dyer go in now as manager, it's his first managerial experience as well, so you're going to look at that and say it could go either way, but you look at his experience that he's had, the clubs that he's played for, the level that he's played for, you'd expect him to demand respect from the players and have a lot of knowledge as well.

"I think with them as a side as well, they won the FA Trophy last year on penalties, so they have got the quality in the squad to be challenging. Even though they've done it in the cup, they've got to turn that form into results in the league, but I know they've had an overhaul in the squad as well.

"So, they will be an interesting one, but for the size of the club that they are with Kieron Dyer going in there, I think that's one way they'll be pushing at the top as well."
