Nicky Hayen admits Burnley ‘needed a bit of luck’ to knock out Notts County

The Clarets prevailed 4-3 in a shootout to book a place in the second round of the Carabao Cup after a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

Veteran defender Kyle Walker held his nerve with the winning kick for the Championship side after Clarets goalkeeper Max Weiss had saved from Emile Acquah and Jacob Bedeau.

Hayen said: “We have some relief but also happiness because in the cup you are either in or your out – and we’re in. That’s the important thing.

“At the end we needed a bit of luck with the shootout, but it’s about performing under pressure. You have to score your goals and then rely on your goalkeeper to make the saves.”

County, who earned promotion through the League Two play-offs last season, shocked their hosts when winger Callum Roberts marked his first game back at the club with a fine 42nd-minute strike.

Burnley levelled two minutes into the second half when Zian Flemming burst on to Marcus Edwards’ through ball to lift a finish over County keeper James Belshaw.

County manager Martin Paterson, who spent five years at Burnley during his playing career, said: “I can only describe it as a beautiful defeat.

“What I mean by that is that there are so many positives from the way we played today. Burnley are a top-end Championship side, but we had our moments to win.”
