Premier League wrap-up: Arsenal increase their lead, Man Utd's streak ends and Tottenham teetering

Here are some of the bigger talking points from the weekend matches of Matchweek 29.

Gunners grind their way to victory

Arsenal moved to seven points clear after a 1-0 victory at Brighton that has been panned by pundits and Seagulls boss Fabian Hürzeler alike. The Gunners eschewed any thoughts of attacking after Bukayo Saka's game-winner inside the opening 10 minutes and protected their lead through another defensive masterclass, gaining three valuable points on the same day that their chief rivals in the title race drew at home.

Mikel Arteta's side has been criticised for their pragmatic style of play this season, with a reliance on set pieces to generate goals a big stickler for many observers. Their physicality is another new wrinkle that has also drawn ire, and on Wednesday Hürzeler said Arsenal were guilty of "making their own rules" amid perceived time-wasting tactics.

One of the biggest criticisms Arsenal's had over the years is that they play a naive style; one predicated on "outfootballing" the other side. Now that the north London side are doing what it takes to win, their rivals aren't taking too kindly to it.

Not that Arsenal should care, of course. They are just a handful of games away from their first Premier League title in 22 years, so if this is what it takes then they'll keep doing it.

Newcastle end Red Devils' epic run

Manchester United's 11-game undefeated streak is over.

The Red Devils fell 2-1 at Newcastle, with the deciding goal coming at the stroke of full-time. It was a brutal way for Man United to get their first loss of 2026, especially since the Magpies were down a player for the entire second half.

Michael Carrick's men still ended Matchweek 29 in third place, a massive improvement from where they were when Ruben Amorim was sacked. Man United are in the thick of the race for a Champions League spot, and unlike most of the teams around them in the standings they are unencumbered by the demands of cup football as the Premier League is the only competition the Red Devils are still alive in.

With a quick regroup, this team could start another unbeaten run in short order.

Five straight losses for Spurs

It's been a rough ride for Igor Tudor, who suffered his third loss as manager of Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. 

The poor form preceded Tudor's recent arrival of course, and Spurs have now rung off five straight defeats in the league after Thursday's 3-1 loss to visiting Crystal Palace. It was another disaster-class for the struggling side, who lost the services of Mickey van de Ven to a red card while leading in the 38th minute and proceeded to give up three unanswered goals.

Tudor took over a side teetering on depths they've not seen in nearly 50 years, as they are now a genuine relegation candidate. Thursday's result leaves Spurs a single point above the relegation zone with nine games left in the season.
