Real Madrid swoop in on Hull City transfer target

The Tigers are preparing to return to the Premier League after nine years away from England's top flight, and they are looking to bolster their squad in the transfer market ahead of the 2026-27 season. The newly promoted club have made a few modest acquisitions thus far, but they were reportedly on the verge of a major signing this week.

Then Real Madrid stepped in.

Hull were linked to Levante striker Carlos Espi, who scored 13 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions last season. Multiple reports stated the Tigers had all but landed the 21-year-old forward amid interest from Serie A sides Bologna and Lazio, with the Premier League outfit set to activate his €25 million release clause.

Before they could finalize the deal however, Real Madrid registered their interest in Espi, who would replace outgoing striker Gonzalo Garcia in Jose Mourinho's squad.

Then, on Thursday, Los Blancos officially announced Espi as their newest player.

"Real Madrid C.F. and Levante U.D. have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Carlos Espí, who will be linked to our club for the next five seasons, until June 30, 2031.

"At 21 years old, Carlos Espí has played three seasons at Levante, during which he appeared in 66 matches and scored 20 goals. 

"Last season, he was named the best U-23 player in the league."

Hull have yet to kick a ball in the top flight this year but, in losing Espi to Real Madrid, they've just been taught a cruel lesson in the pecking order of the football world.
