Sheffield Wednesday beat Bolton in Carabao Cup first round
Sheffield Wednesday advanced to the second round of the Carabao Cup following a 1-0 victory against Bolton, who had Xavier Simons sent off in the second half.
Jamal Lowe scored seven minutes after coming on to make it a winning start to the season for Wednesday, who put in an improved performance following the break after weathering some first-half pressure.
Thierry Gale carved out a couple of good early chances for the visitors. He set up Luca Stephenson, who shot narrowly wide, and then his low cross found Ruben Rodrigues, whose skewed effort from a good position missed the target.
Rodrigues also had a free-kick saved by Joe Lumley in a first half dominated by Bolton, with Wednesday’s only effort of note a low drive from Callum Slattery which went inches wide.
Bolton were reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute when Simons was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after clashing with Harry Gray during a brief flare-up involving a number of players.
Lowe struck the winner in the 70th minute, neatly chipping Jack Bonham after receiving a fine ball from Barry Bannan.
Bonham prevented the hosts from scoring a second goal, producing a good reaction save to deny Sil Swinkels.
