Tranmere brush aside Oldham to maintain unbeaten start
Tranmere maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Oldham at Prenton Park.
Dylan Jones’ second goal in three games and a Joe Ironside penalty extended Rovers’ unbeaten stretch to five games as they moved into the League Two play-off places.
The home side had the first clear chance to open the scoring in the sixth minute but Jones saw his effort smothered by Athletic goalkeeper Matthew Hudson.
Tranmere took a deserved lead in the 17th minute when Jones latched onto a perfectly-weighted through ball from Tom Ince before slotting past Hudson from the edge of the box.
Oldham almost levelled just before the break when Keenan Appiah-Forson was denied by Luke McGee, with Kane Drummond’s follow-up blocked on the line.
They came close again 15 minutes after the interval, with Ryan Delaney seeing his speculative effort hit the crossbar with McGee helpless.
The visitors continued to press for an equaliser, with Appiah-Forson and Oliver Norburn both seeing shots blocked.
But the home side made the game safe with eight minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty after Gus Scott-Morris handled in the box, and Ironside calmly converted from the spot.
