Liverpool slip, Spurs salvage point, Mourinho downed: Five talking points from Tuesday's UEFA Champions League fixtures

Liverpool fell to a shock loss against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, while Tottenham Hotspur came from two goals down to draw with FK Bodø/Glimt.

The Premier League pair saw their respective campaigns in Europe hit roadblocks away from home, though both Arne Slot and Thomas Frank may have contrasting takeaways.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were among the teams that recorded blowout wins, while Chelsea got the narrow edge over old boss Jose Mourinho and Benfica.

Here, DAZN News breaks down five key takeaways from the second match week of UCL action this season.

Reds' rough run catches up again

The Premier League champions followed up their first defeat of the domestic season against Crystal Palace with a tough defeat on the road against the Super Lig heavyweights.

Victor Osimhen's first-half penalty proved the difference against the Reds, who further lost Alisson to injury after the break and saw their own spot-kick shout overturned by VAR.

Two losses by the end of September is still a pretty low record for any title contender on multiple fronts - but there are lingering questions to be had over a busy transfer window.

While stumping up for Alexander Isak was seen as key, frontline expenses yet to truly fire have exposed a rearguard in need of bolstered support. Slot must find the answers.

Spurs make Great North escape

Tottenham meanwhile clawed back a point inside the Arctic Circle against their Eliteserien hosts thanks to a late own goal following a deflection off defender Jostein Gundersen.

Spurs had previously gone behind thanks to a brace for Jens Petter Hauge, but pulled one back through Micky van de Ven heading into the final quarter before sealing the draw.

For Frank, it ensures the only regulation time loss on his record thus far remains that 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth heading into the international break since he took on the job.

The manner of the game's progression means it will likely feel like one point gained rather than two dropped - but nevertheless, a result is a result and they will take it home.

Mbappe and Kane thrive with World Cup eye

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just over the horizon, there's plenty more at stake this season for players - but two men need only worry about injury when it comes to their place.

Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick for Madrid against minnows Kairat and Harry Kane's Bayern brace versus underdogs Pafos aren't exactly the most shocking outcomes of the round.

But they further underline just what red hot form both men are in, as they bid to build a successful season that could be a springboard to a triumph in North America next year.

Mbappe already has a medal from 2018 but suffered heartbreak in 2022. Kane meanwhile has Euro 2020 and 2024 losses to avenge, in what could be his last major tournament.

Chelsea get last laugh on Mourinho

There's not many characters in football like the Portuguese, one of the sport's most decorated managers who has become something of a nomadic outsider in recent seasons.

His last trophy was the inaugural UEFA Conference League with Roma over three years ago, and after no silverware in Turkey with Fenerbahçe, he's back to his first-ever club.

Still, he could not get the drop on arguably his most storied employer as his return to Chelsea with Benfica ended with a first defeat of his new reign at the Primeira Liga outfit.

A Richard Rios own goal in the first half proved enough for the Blues - but Enzo Maresca's misfiring troubles are not over either, after Joao Pedro was sent off in the 96th minute.

Mix-and-match results across the park

Madrid and Bayern were far from the only teams to mount big results on Tuesday too, with a host of teams racking up some big statement results of their own to savour too.

Atletico Madrid's 5-1 hit job against Eintracht Frankfurt sits among the most eye-catching, and follows their crosstown demolition against Los Blancos at the weekend to boot.

Marseille meanwhile handed Ajax a drubbing in an impressive 4-0 win, while last season's finalists Inter Milan got in on the action with a 3-0 victory against Slavia Prague.

Atalanta meanwhile completed the comeback games with two late goals of their own to sink Club Brugge and spare their home blushes in Bergamo.
