World Cup stories: How much prize money do the winners and each team get?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be bigger than all previous incarnations of the competition, with 48 teams playing in 104 matches when the tournament kicks off in 43 days' time.
But it's not only the tournament that has grown, as the prize money on offer will also be the largest in the history of the quadrennial event.
A grand total of $871 million USD has been set aside by FIFA for the participating nations of next summer's competition, which will be held in three North American countries.

FIFA World Cup 26 prize money: How much does each country get?
FIFA had originally announced that the total prize money for this summer's tournament would be $727 million, but on April 29 they increased that number by 15%.
Of the $871 million that FIFA will distribute to participating nations, $703 million will be paid out as prize money.
For comparison, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar had a total prize pool of $440 million split amongst 32 teams.
Additionally, FIFA announced that every one of the 48 teams will receive $2.5 million "to cover preparation costs." That means each of the teams are guaranteed $12.5 million for their participation in the tournament.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will also be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in December.
“FIFA is proud to be in its most solid financial position ever, enabling us to help all our Member Associations in an unprecedented way," Infantino said in the announcement for the prize money increase in April. "This is one more example of how FIFA’s resources are reinvested back into the game.”

In addition to the $2.5 million given to every team prior to the tournament, the winners will earn $50 million for lifting the famous FIFA World Cup trophy.
As usual, teams earn more the further they progress in the competition.
