Everything pointed toward Cody Rhodes completing the comeback and finishing the story.
After all, he blasted Roman Reigns with everything from the Cody Cutter to multiple Cross Rhodes and even his late dad's classic Bionic Elbow move.
He also managed to put "The Head of The Table" through a table.
Rhodes even had Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens even the odds against an interfering Usos.
All that being said, a fourth interference from Solo Sikoa ensured that WrestleMania 39 ended in an "American Nightmare" for Rhodes as The Bloodline Enforcer's Samoan Spike to Rhodes' throat paved the way for Reigns to spear him and retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship inside SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
The shocking result brought Rhodes' dramatic story to a soul-crushing end as Reigns' 945-day stranglehold over the WWE continues.
The match had Reigns and Rhodes each managing several near pinfalls and the referee tossing Sikoa from ringside after The Enforcer had delivered a chair shot to Rhodes' ribs, tripped him and additionally hit him in the back with a weight belt.
When Rhodes nailed Reigns with two consecutive Cross Rhodes, it looked like he had the win in hand before the Usos rushed to the champ's aid. While Owens evened the score and stunned Reigns and Zayn added the Helluva Kick, Paul Heyman getting up on the ring apron bought a returning, now hooded Sikoa enough time to deliver the Samoan Spike, allowing Reigns to retain his championship.
Earlier in Night Two of WrestleMania 39, Bianca Belair retained her Raw Women's title with a win over Asuka, while Gunther also kept his Intercontinental Championship wrapped around his waist by defeating Drew McIntyre and Sheamus.
