NFL: Aaron Donald returns to the Rams

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year has agreed to a one-year, $20 million contract. Performance and playoff incentives could take the deal’s total value to $30 million.

His return alone would have been enough to shift the balance of power in the NFC. But Donald is not returning to just any defense: he will now line up alongside Myles Garrett, who set an NFL record with 23 sacks last season.

The Rams already had one of the most impressive defensive lines in the league. They have now added one of the greatest players ever to play the position.

Why did Aaron Donald decide to return?

When the Rams honored him in the fall of 2025, Donald appeared to have no desire to resume his career. He was enjoying time with his family, developing his off-field business interests and seemed completely at peace with his decision.

The construction of the Rams’ 2026 roster gradually changed the situation.

Matthew Stafford, fresh from winning his first MVP award, first announced that he would return for an 18th NFL season. Los Angeles then strengthened its secondary by adding cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

The Rams then made their most spectacular move by acquiring Garrett from the Cleveland Browns.

Donald has always had to contend with an extraordinary number of double-teams. The opportunity to play alongside a pass rusher capable of commanding just as much attention on the other side of the line made a return significantly more appealing.

The Super Bowl’s return to SoFi Stadium in February 2027 also influenced his decision. It was in that stadium that Donald sealed the Rams’ victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

Donald spent 14 weeks preparing for his return

This was not an impulsive decision. Donald says he followed a 14-week program designed to assess whether he could meet the physical demands of the NFL again.

He resumed speed work with the trainer who has worked with him since high school, completed extensive conditioning sessions and recorded each of his movements to analyze his footwork, changes of direction and hip explosiveness.

Donald returned to the practice field on Sunday to participate in individual drills. He must now readjust to the speed of 11-on-11 work and rediscover the instincts required in a competitive game.

His availability for the Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne therefore remains uncertain.

A defensive line with no NFL equivalent

The Rams’ defensive front already had very few weaknesses.

Garrett arrives after recording 23 sacks last season. Byron Young is coming off a 12-sack campaign and his first Pro Bowl selection, while Kobie Turner added seven sacks.

Braden Fiske and Poona Ford also provide several options on the interior of the line.

Donald joins that rotation with 111 career sacks, eight first-team All-Pro selections and three Defensive Player of the Year awards. Garrett has recorded 125.5 sacks and won the league’s top defensive honor twice.

The Rams will become the first team in NFL history to feature two players who have each recorded at least 100 career sacks and produced a season with 20 sacks or more.

On paper, no other defensive line appears to possess the same combination of individual talent, versatility and depth.

An almost impossible problem for opposing offensive lines

Donald and Garrett lining up together will transform the protection decisions opposing offenses must make.

An offensive line can slide its protection towards Garrett and provide help from a tight end or running back. Doing so, however, risks leaving Donald in a one-on-one matchup on the interior.

It can choose to double-team Donald, but that would leave its offensive tackle isolated against Garrett.

Even when an offense finds a way to slow down both stars, it must still account for Young, Turner and Fiske.

Defensive coordinator Chris Shula will also be able to move Donald and Garrett before the snap, line them up on the same side or use stunts to create communication errors.

The true strength of this defense therefore extends beyond its collection of star names. Opposing teams will struggle to predict where the pressure is going to come from.

An ideal rotation to protect Donald

At 35 and after two seasons away from the game, Donald is unlikely to immediately handle the same number of snaps he played before retiring.

The Rams do not need him to.

Their depth will allow them to manage his workload and deploy him in the situations where his impact can be greatest: third downs, the closing stages of games and red-zone possessions.

The rotation could make Donald even more dangerous. Rather than playing entire games while constantly battling two blockers, he could enter crucial snaps with greater freshness.

His workload could vary considerably from week to week, further complicating preparations for opposing offenses.

Are the Rams guaranteed to win the Super Bowl?

No NFL team can ever be considered a certainty.

Donald is still a 35-year-old player who has not appeared in a game since January 2024. How quickly he readjusts to game speed, how his body responds from week to week and how the Rams manage his workload all remain unknown.

The Rams will also have to contend with immense pressure. Every opponent will approach them as the team to beat, while their season will be judged almost exclusively on their performance in the playoffs.

But while a Super Bowl victory can never be guaranteed, Los Angeles now appears to have the most complete roster in the NFL.

The offense still features Stafford, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. The secondary has been significantly strengthened by the additions of McDuffie and Watson. The defensive line can now pair two of the most dominant pass rushers of their generation.

Donald has not transformed an average team into a contender. He has joined a favorite that was already built to win immediately.

His return could nevertheless be the difference between a team capable of reaching the Super Bowl and one that nobody wants to face in January.
