Vita Vea signs $30m Bucs extension: What he brings to the defense

The deal ties the two-time Pro Bowler to the Buccaneers through the 2027 season and includes $30 million guaranteed, effectively locking him in for $48 million over the next two years.

From Vea's hold-in to now

Vea showed up for conditioning testing on July 28 and then didn't practice again, dealing with a back injury while also sitting out to leverage a new deal.

He requested a trade last month after realising the Bucs weren't going to hand a 31-year-old a long-term deal.

General manager Jason Licht had said all along that he wasn't trading Vea, despite interest from multiple teams.

The new terms mean the defensive tackle is slated to make $24 million per year, tying him for 11th among all interior defensive linemen.

Licht is more than happy to draw a line under the issue, describing Vea as "a tremendous leader."

What Vea's extension means to the Bucs

Since Tampa Bay drafted him 12th overall back in 2018, Vea has been a stalwart in the Buccaneers' defensive front.

At 6'4" and 347 pounds, he commands more than his fair share of double teams and thereby gives his teammates more opportunities to make plays.

Despite attracting plenty of attention from would-be blockers, he remains a force against the run and pass.

With 35 career sacks, Vea ranks eighth on Tampa Bay's all-time sack list and third among all Buccaneers defensive tackles, behind only Warren Sapp and Gerald McCoy.

Turning 32 next February, Vea has shown no discernible drop-off in how disruptive he is on a football field

And in a defensive front now featuring Calijah Kancey, first-round rookie Rueben Bain, and Yaya Diaby, there's every reason to believe the man-mountain can keep that kind of production going in 2026.
