Cowboys restructure Prescott and Smith deals to clear $47m in cap space

The Dallas Cowboys started the day with a projected $58 million cap space deficit. After reworking the deals of several major stars, they've cleared $47 million from their books.
Quarterback Dak Prescott and offensive lineman Tyler Smith have agreed to restructure their contracts, and wideout CeeDee Lamb is expected to follow suit.
In addition to the franchise tag placed on George Pickens last week, the latest moves give Dallas the freedom to become bigger players in free agency when it opens next week.
GM Jerry Jones hinted at big moves when discussing free agency at the NFL Combine.
"We will spend more money in free agency than we have," Jones promised. "Expect me to go borrow some of my future," he continued.
"I want to do everything we possibly can to stop somebody and to basically win some third downs more than we did last year."
The Cowboys might not be done there.
Per ESPN's Todd Archer, Jones also suggested he would rework deals for defensive tackles Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams and Osa Odighizuwa, who are scheduled to count around $63 million against the cap.
Speaking to reporters aboard his luxury bus last week, Jones made his ultimate goal clear.
How Dallas intends to spend their newly acquired cap space remains to be seen, but at least they have the room to make some noise in free agency. That wasn't the case just a few hours ago.
