Cowboys are still shopping: Which position should Jones target next?

The Dallas Cowboys have added Von Miller to their stable of edge rushers, but owner and GM Jerry Jones has made it clear he is not done there.

On the opening day of training camp, he revealed that he would be "very interested" in giving up "something substantive" if it meant adding the right player.

And this week, he doubled down on his desire to reinforce the roster, telling reporters: "If we saw an opportunity to take a little of the future and put it on this team, I'd do it if it would help us."

Here is what Jones said in full, and the position he should target next.

Jones still wants a difference-maker

"Yes, if we had an opportunity, I would be…" Jones said in reply to a question about whether he is still looking to add more players to the team.

"It's as much about what I think of where we are, which I'm more positive than when we started camp, seriously, about what our chances are," he continued.

Jones believes that the sky is the limit if the Cowboys stay healthy, but he also made it clear he is still open to adding more players.

"I'm even more excited today than I was when we started camp that our team is going to be one that, if we can have some things go right for us, avoid some injury, we could really be something that we all want to be, and that's a team that's competing for the big game," he continued.

"Bottom line is, the answer is yes. If we saw something that would help us anyplace, we'd do it."

Which positions should the Cowboys reinforce?

The edge group was young, if a little thin, but Miller's arrival gives them a player who can not only work into the rotation but also mentor others.

Linebacker was a position of need at one point, but Dallas added reinforcements by trading for Dee Winters and investing a third-round pick in Jaishawn Barham.

They should be set at the position assuming DeMarvion Overshown remains healthy, and Barham continues to ascend as he has throughout camp.

That leaves cornerback, where at least DaRon Bland looks all the way back from foot surgery.

Behind him, however, it is a relatively weak group comprising Shavon Revel, Cobie Durant, and Derion Kendrick.

One of that trio may yet surprise, but if Jones is serious about competing, a true shutdown corner is required.

The question, several months after the top options signed elsewhere in free agency, is who they should target.

The smart money suggests it will be either a veteran displaced by a new addition or one whose contract expires in 2027.

But as I look down the list of players who fall into the latter category, there are very few talented enough to give Dallas a championship-level defense, and even fewer who would be available.

With that said, Jones has surprised us before and could do so again. Let's wait to see what he has up his sleeve.
