Week 14 of the 2025 college football season is unmissable, with a jam-packed slate of rivalry games that could flip the playoff race on its head.

ACC Chaos Incoming
We’re at the business end of the season. And for Power 4 teams in the current 12-team playoff format, you are almost certain of a spot in the postseason bracket if you’re able to win your conference. Which means, for a lot of schools, coaches and fans, there’s a lot on the line this weekend.
One look at the ACC, however, and you’d be forgiven for thinking nobody wants the hassle of playing in late December. Early-season favourites Clemson haven’t shown up. North Carolina have tanked under Bill Belichick. And early frontrunners Louisville and Georgia Tech have stumbled in recent weeks.
What that all means is, with one game to go, any two of six teams can make the ACC title game. Virginia and Pitt lead the way with one conference loss each. The Cavaliers face rivals Virginia Tech, whilst the Panthers host Miami, a two-loss program that can still find their way into the equation.
SMU, along with the aforementioned Yellow Jackets, both have slim hopes of finishing in the top two spots come the end of Saturday. But it’s the Duke Blue Devils, at 6-5, who represent the most outrageous option for making the playoffs. They need a win over feisty Wake Forest and a lot of help from elsewhere. But with just two conference losses, they are, somehow, still alive.
The ACC has five teams ranked in the Top 25. None of them are likely to finish in the Top 12 on their own merit, so winning their conference is their only shot at the playoffs. If drama is what you seek on Saturday, then head to the Atlantic Coast.
The Coaching Carousel
Compared to the NFL where there is an element of decorum when it comes to coaching changes, college football is the Wild West. There’s no Black Monday, or waiting for other teams to be eliminated from the playoffs before speaking to their staff. It’s every school for itself, and with thirteen coaches already relieved of their duties this season the race is on to land the best candidate on the market.
Five schools have already found their new man. Kent State (Mark Carney), Virginia Tech (James Franklin), Oklahoma State (Eric Morris), Colorado State (Jim Mora) and Arkansas (Alex Golesh) are now set for 2026 and beyond. But three of those are currently employed elsewhere, meaning North Texas, UConn and USF are now also in the market.
Further complicating matters is the extended postseason. The Mean Green have a shot at the playoffs, and Coach Morris will see out the year in Denton before heading on to Stillwater. But with recruiting at a crucial juncture, that isn’t an option for every school. And that complication may explain why the biggest domino is yet to fall…
Ole Miss supremo Lane Kiffin isn’t averse to courting potential employees. In 2022, he resisted overtures from Auburn. And with LSU & Florida volunteering huge money, the temptation to move to an SEC rival may be difficult to resist. The Rebels have made their own contract offer and expect an answer after the Egg Bowl on Friday. But if Kiffin chooses to move on, the administration has made it clear he won’t coach Ole Miss in the playoffs, a difficult compromise for him to make.
With more schools expected to part ways with their coaches after the weekend, the coaching carousel is only going to get faster. But where will everyone land once the music has stopped?
Friday Night Rivalry Games With Playoff Implications
Week 14 doesn’t just represent the end of the 2025 college football regular season. The final week of the year is, for many teams, when they face their biggest rivals. And this year, many of those grudge matches have more than just bragging rights and local pride on the line.
For some of these matchups, this isn’t a unique situation. When Michigan & Ohio State face off, the Big Ten is usually at stake, let alone a place in the playoffs. But for others, the chance of making it to the dance isn’t a yearly occurrence.
Incredibly, most of these crucial contests take place on Friday night. Ole Miss heads to Starkville looking to put the capper on the best year in their history. Then we make the short trip to Atlanta, where Georgia Tech and Georgia indulge in some ‘Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate’, with both schools eyeing a shot at the National Championship.
What about Texas, who hosts Texas A&M? Could they possibly sneak into the playoffs and ruin their rivals’ SEC ambitions at the same time?
And finally, we get a 2am treat in the form of the Territorial Cup; both Arizona and Arizona State face off as ranked opponents for the first time in over a decade. The Sun Devils are still in with a chance of a Big 12 title game appearance despite quarterback injury woes.
