SEC files amendment against LSU, Lane Kiffin and school officials

This add-on would give the SEC authority to expel LSU from the conference.

SEC presidents and chancellors will meet on Thursday "to decide whether to terminate LSU as an SEC member," per the filing made on Tuesday.

What could LSU's future look like?

In the off-chance that LSU is expelled from the SEC, it would not be the first team without a conference; in fact, it would join Notre Dame and UConn as the only active independent teams in college football.

That is if the Tigers decide to stay independent and not look to join another league like the Big Ten, the ACC or the Big 12.

However, neither the Fighting Irish nor the Huskies are independent due to expulsion.

Notre Dame remains that way because of their deal with NBC Sports, meaning they get to keep all the revenue from their games rather than giving it to a conference.

While UConn left the AAC due to distances between the other teams and revenue, they have remained independent since 2019, but are in search of a new home.

After other conferences disagreed on the inclusion of professional athletes on their rosters, it seems unlikely they would look to add LSU as a member.

The ongoing battle between LSU and the SEC

This has been brewing for the last couple of weeks after a group of ex-college players won a restraining order against the NCAA, giving them another year of eligibility.

The filing came after the NCAA granted college athletes five years of eligibility (previously four), starting with the class of 2022.

LSU and Lane Kiffin shared their interest in welcoming professional athletes onto their roster, such as Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both former Ole Miss players under Kiffin.

Neither of them were registered on LSU's roster for their game against Clemson on Saturday; however, they could still be added later in the season.

Analysis: Should LSU be expelled?

Frankly, expulsion is a very big punishment for something that has only been just talk.

There is no NFL player on LSU's roster; technically, there have been no violations of the SEC's new policy banning pros either.

However, Kiffin has publicly stated countless times his intention of welcoming Wright and Harris onto the team, despite the SEC's warnings.

Pending other sanctions that may be put in place, it could actually benefit LSU to be expelled from the SEC in the sense that they could do whatever they want regarding who they have or not have on their roster.

It could actually be worse for them to stay in the SEC if their game plan is to house professional players.

It will be really interesting to see how Thursday's SEC meeting goes.
