NCAA college football Week 1: Michigan chaos headlines top storylines

From officiating controversy to Lane Kiffin's LSU masterclass, these are the stories that dominated the slate.

Michigan's stolen second sparks controversy

Bryce Underwood's throw to the end zone hung in the air too long and died as the clock struck zero, and for a moment Western Michigan appeared to pull off the most incredible win over Michigan in decades.

Then officials put one second back on the clock without saying why on air, leaving everyone flabbergasted.

Underwood found JJ Buchanan on the second attempt, and Michigan escaped with a 13-12 victory that has everyone talking.

Lane Kiffin's LSU dominant

Clemson arrived as 10-point underdogs and left looking like they belonged nowhere near the field, with LSU winning 51-10.

LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt passed for 230 yards and ran for 113 more, three total touchdowns, and his team racked up 309 rushing yards.

To add insult to injury, Kiffin told ESPN's Holly Rowe on his way to the tunnel, "Imagine if we had pro players," a nod to the transfers LSU still can't play.

UMass gets its Power Four win

Rutgers scored on the opening drive in Piscataway, and everything after that fell apart, with UMass ripping off 30 unanswered points to end its own 16-game skid under second-year coach Joe Harasymiak.

Quarterback Pop Watson threw three touchdown passes in the 37-21 win, and this program had never beaten a Power Four opponent before, not once, not in over a decade.

Greg Schiano is entering Year 7 off six mediocre seasons in charge, and losing to the program with the worst winning percentage in the entire FBS will not make that stretch look any better.

Dante Moore powers Oregon to win

Boise State led for long stretches in Eugene, and by the time Oregon pulled clear for good, the Ducks had let 27 points in against a team widely viewed as a genuine Group of Five playoff contender.

Dante Moore threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, a career high, and Oregon still needed a fourth-down stop from Nasir Wyatt to win 34-27.

Dan Lanning did his best to stay composed in his post-game interview, but his frustration was clear.

Keelon Russell arrives for Alabama

Crimson Tide quarterback Keelon Russell won the Alabama job over the more experienced Austin Mack, and his first start delivered a mix of promise and nervous moments.

He finished with 342 total yards and ran in a touchdown in the 48-10 win over East Carolina.

There were pre-snap penalties and plays where he held the ball too long, but on the whole, he looked capable of holding his own while the ground game gets the job done.
