Quinnen Williams declares Cowboys defense reborn

On that side of the ball, Dallas' unit essentially undid all the good work of their offensive counterparts, ranking dead last in points allowed.

But as the new season rounds into view, the arrival of defensive coordinator Christian Parker and a multitude of new signings have Williams dreaming big.

Here is why the star DT believes the new-look Cowboys defense is "night and day" compared to last year, along with our analysis of what to expect from the unit in the 2026 NFL season.

Williams on Cowboys' culture shift

Williams raved about what has changed since last year.

"The growth, it's like night and day," he said, per the team website. "Starting in OTAs and starting the first week of training camp, getting a chance to go against one of the best offenses in battle every single day has helped us tremendously."

Describing Dallas' offense as one of the best is no exaggeration. Dak Prescott and Co. finished seventh in points scored last year despite missing CeeDee Lamb for three games.

Williams said everyone is buying into the turnaround.

"The mindset coming from the coaches, top down to the players and to the leadership, has been drastically changed. It's just fun, man.

"I just can't wait to see the process and the results from all the hard work. But we're not done yet."

How Dallas rebuilt its defense

It's easy to dismiss positive camp talk as blind optimism, but in this case, the Cowboys have genuine reasons to believe.

While Parker enters his first year as an NFL defensive coordinator, he brings a CV that includes helping turn the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles into top-level defenses.

In his role as the defensive backs coach for both of his former teams, he oversaw the development of All-Pros Patrick Surtain, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

He now gets to build a defense around Williams, who, with a full offseason with his new team under his belt, has been joined in Dallas by a series of potentially impactful signings.

Rashan Gary joined via a trade to provide a little more juice to the front seven, and the leadership of free agent additions, Jalen Thompson, Von Miller, and Cobie Durant should prove invaluable.

As important as those veterans will be, it is perhaps the rookie additions who could prove to be the final piece of the puzzle.

Five of Dallas' seven 2026 NFL Draft picks were spent on the defensive side of the ball, with Caleb Downs, Malachi Lawrence, and LT Overton leading the field.

And as one of the most decorated safeties at the collegiate level in recent memory, Downs is the player tipped to thrive the most and, by extension, help Dallas' defense reach its potential.

Williams says urgency driving Cowboys improvements

Having talented defensive players is key, no doubt, but Williams circled back to his earlier point about the importance of being tested in practice.

"The last time I kind of felt this was when I was at 'Bama, when it came down to you going against first-rounders across from you," he said.

"But, here in the NFL, it's All-Pros everywhere, getting a chance to go against one of the best offenses in the league and one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

"And we've got one of the best offensive lines in the league, so [we're] using them as a helping tool to get better every single day, and the urgency level from a defensive standpoint to get better every single day. It's been well-needed and fun. It's definitely a battle."

Analysis: Expect improvement, not dominance

The Cowboys' defense in 2025 set the bar so low that the easy part of this evaluation is predicting improvement.

Much harder is determining how much better they will be, because anything less than a mid-tier performance would mean failure.

Williams is undoubtedly the star of the group, and if just a few of Gary, DeMarvion Overshown, Kenny Clark, or DaRon Bland can return to anywhere near their previous best, Parker's group will be in good shape.

And if Downs lives up to the hype, and Lawrence, Jaishawn Barham, and Overton develop quickly, even a top-10 finish is not out of the question.

But that is a lot of ifs, and experience tells us that the reality will fall somewhere between the most optimistic expectation and something lower.

So for now, I predict this group will become a middling unit. One that endures some early struggles but finds its feet down the stretch as the new pieces settle into a rhythm.

Achieve that, and assuming Prescott, Lamb and Co. deliver as they did last year, Brian Schottenheimer's Cowboys could be in the mix for a playoff spot.
