Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant are among the most famous men's players to have appeared at the tournament, while Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart have represented their respective countries in the women's.

However, being a household name does not guarantee winning the MVP (most valuable player) award at the World Cup, as there have been a range of victors across multiple continents.

List of FIBA Men's World Cup MVP winners

The MVP award was introduced in the maiden FIBA Men's Basketball World Cup, then known as the FIBA World Championship, held in Argentina in 1950.

The South American country were victorious on home soil, with Oscar Furlong, who played as a centre, awarded the individual accolade for his performances throughout the tournament.

Since then, there has been a different winner every competition, with Yugoslavia landing the most MVPs, with six, before becoming two separate nations in Serbia and Montenegro.

List of FIBA Women's World Cup MVP winners

Unlike the men's tournament, the MVP award was not presented in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup until 1967, when Korea's Shin-Ja Park was given the accolade.

There was then a 35-year wait before another player was crowned MVP, with Lisa DeShaun Leslie of the United States handed the award in 2002.

Players from the United States have been credited with the individual honour four times, making up over half of the overall winners.
