In more quirky news, the tallest and smallest players have caught the eye with more than two feet separating China's Ziyu Zhang and Mali's Fatoumata Sanou.

Ziyu Zhang and Fatoumata Sanou: worlds apart in height

At 7'4", China's Ziyu Zhang is the tallest player at the World Cup and has been compared to NBA Hall of Famer Yao Ming.

The Shandong Six Stars center is the daughter of two basketball players, thus destined for a career in the sport, and has literally gone to the very top.

Only 19, Zhang was named the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup MVP, where she averaged 35 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

Compare that to Mali's Fatoumata Sanou, who, at 5'1", is the shortest player in the competition and over two feet below Zhang.

Sanou was part of the Mali team that won the 2022 FIBA U18 Women's AfroBasket, scoring 18 points in the final.

Unfortunately for the audience, the pair will not meet at this year's competition as Mali were eliminated after finishing bottom of their group, while China have advanced to the quarter-final qualifiers.
