What next for American heavyweight boxing after Torrez Jr. loss?
Mason vs. Bell on DAZN subscription - Saturday

It was supposed to be the moment that American heavyweight boxing's next great hope earned his stripes under the lights.

Instead, a brutal hit from Frank Sanchez sunk Richard Torrez Jr.'s hopes, and left him crumpled on the Giza canvas in May.

Defeat for the latter was perhaps not unexpected - few tests worthy of the Cuban's calibre had crossed his pro path thus far.

But it nevertheless represented a bitter disappointment, one further calcified by the news of Oleksandr Usyk's title-reign exit.

Watch: How this epic fight unfolded from behind the scenes

The Ukrainian's decision to swap his straps for a free shot at his "last dance" has opened up the division to a brisk sea change.

Yet it feels like the road to the top of the glamour division - a division once dominated by them - is tough for stateside fighters.

Now, as the merry-go-round begins, the question lingers - where is America's next top heavyweight, and when will he truly arrive?

Who are the leading American heavyweights?

Run an eye down the top-ranked contenders from the United States, and there's a few glaringly familiar names to fight fans.

The obvious one is Deontay Wilder. A former champion, 'The Bronze Bomber' was the nation's last glamour-division superstar.

His trilogy with Tyson Fury might have ended with no victory in his favour, but his reputation has nevertheless remained high.

Yet Wilder is undoubtedly on the slide, long past his heyday. Talk of a bout with Usyk is likely as good as it will get for him now.

Jarrell Miller is another seemingly into the closing chapter of his career. Thirty-seven now, the star has never quite taken flight.

A strong WBA ranking - only Murat Gassiev and Moses Itauma are above him - could open up a surprise route to a world title.

But it feels like 'Big Baby' has seen his chances slip away before too, even if a 2023 loss to Daniel Dubois is his only reverse.

Who are the new generation in the mix?

Cast a gaze further down the list though, and there a few names in the mix - all of whom are arguably yet to reach their prime.

Jared Anderson feels like a lead contender. The star was enjoying a heady domestic ascent before a KO loss to Martin Bakole.

The problem here is that the star has fought just once since the beginning of 2025, with a wide decision win over Marios Kollias.

That lack of activity does not help to build a profile. Torrez Jr., conversely, has duly stepped into the ring three times since then.

Then there is Gustavo Trujillo and Brandon Moore. Domestic fighters in their early thirties, they both hold WBO ranking spots.

The former is unbeaten, but yet to really capture the imagination. The latter, meanwhile, has just the one defeat on his record.

But, again, it came against Torrez Jr. during the latter's ascent. Like Trujillo, Moore has mostly been limited in his opportunities.

Is Torrez Jr. still the great hope?

The manner of 'The Gentleman Boxer' has caught the eye several times already for fight fans - but his loss to Sanchez is bad.

No heavyweight prospect wants to be shut down in the early rounds, and with such a blow too. Torrez never got out of first gear.

It meant that, on the biggest stage of his professional career, he was unable to render an impression beyond mere sharp defeat.

Torrez's backers still rate him, and he holds a sturdy ranking with the IBF still despite losing their final eliminator to Sanchez too.

A rebuild is undoubtedly in order though - but perhaps this defeat can prove to be a learning curve that springboards him further.

If not, then the fallow years of the American heavyweight dream may be set to continue for a little while yet, stuck in the doldrums.
