Robert McCracken is the trainer responsible for a large portion of Anthony Joshua’s success after helping the 2012 Olympic gold medallist win a world heavyweight title.
Their partnership prospered for several years, and under McCracken’s tutelage in Sheffield, Joshua went on a menacing run that saw him register many impressive victories.
After a defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021, Joshua made changes to his training team, and although many different people have been in his corner since leaving McCracken, the results have not always been positive.
Ahead of a potential fight with Tyson Fury, Joshua has placed his trust in the coaching team of Usyk, with Iegor Golub the man responsible for returning Joshua to former glories.
So far, that relationship has not set the world alight, with Joshua stopping Jake Paul before climbing off the floor twice to stop Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia.
With Joshua now seemingly heading into the biggest fight of his career against longtime rival Fury, McCracken, who knows Joshua as well as anybody in boxing, has provided his thoughts on the eagerly anticipated fight.
“Anything can happen in heavyweight boxing,” said McCracken when speaking about the contest with Seconds Out.
“You can have a night that’s not great, but yeah, it just depends when the fight takes place and what preparation the fighters have. I think they will need a little bit more time to get ready, the both of them.
“Everybody in the world is looking forward to it. Maybe a little bit later than they wanted it, but let’s see on the night. It’s heavyweight boxing; anything can happen. It’s for AJ to make the changes to get it back to where he was.”
