Ruiz crumbles on tough comeback night

Andy Ruiz Jr. saw his comeback crumble to tatters on a difficult night as he lost by unanimous decision to Damian Knyba.

The Mexican-American star, seeking a marquee win to begin his tenure with Matchroom Boxing, ended a two-year wait.

But his trip to the Prudential Center in Newark was not the one he had hoped for, as his foe dropped him in the seventh.

Ruiz vowed to fight on afterwards, yet it seems his hopes of another run towards champion status are firmly buried now.

Knyba gives credentials handy boost

Having been turned over in three rounds by Agit Kabayel earlier this year, Poland star Knyba bounced back to winning ways.

Using his range and height, he successfully broke down an experienced foe to show he believes he still has plenty of threat.

Victory over a marquee name - even one as diminished as Ruiz - should nevertheless bolster his stock moving foward now.

Knyba will therefore hope his backers can secure him another ranked opportunity and the chance to press his own credentials.

Mielnicki lays down middleweight marker

Vito Mielnicki picked up a marker victory over Austin 'Ammo' Williams to underline himself as a serious middleweight contender.

A decorated Golden Gloves amateur, the former has long been tipped as a potential player on the world stage for the division.

Now, he has picked up a win over ex-WBC challenger to Williams to further his own case for a crack at a major title next year.

The star's unanimous decision showcased the best of his skills, and fired a warning shot out to the rest of a crowded field too.
