Deontay Wilder, on the surface, appears to be back to his best according to his former trainer Malik Scott.
Since losing his trilogy meeting with Tyson Fury five years ago, Wilder's career has spiralled with just two wins in his last four fights, and concerns for his wellbeing outside of the ring.Â
Ahead of tonight's fight against Derek Chisora, live on DAZN, Wilder's clash with talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan was a sign of the American's fragile state, with some questioning whether his time in boxing is done.Â
However, Scott believes a long period of recovery has Wilder returning to the peak of his powers.Â
One man who knows Wilder well is his former trainer Scott, who worked with the former WBC heavyweight champion between 2021 and 2025.
But it's not only a fighter-trainer relationship Wilder and Scott posses, the duo were also opponents in 2014 in a fight which Wilder won by first round knockout.Â
Â
Looking on from the York Hall balcony after Thursday's press conference, Scott explained to talkSPORT why Wilder is enjoying boxing again after dealing with mental and injury issues.Â
"He’s a healed Wilder now. He’s mentally and spiritually, but he has also healed physically," Scott said.Â
"He was dealing with a lot of injuries that he never talked about, even at times when he was fighting and winning, he was dealing with injuries.
"He took some time, got all those injuries handled, took some time, got his mental and spirituality handled, now this is a very violent and happy Wilder at the same time."
If Wilder is in a good place both mentally and physically, the 'Bronze Bomber' has a serious chance of spoiling Chisora's final farewell on Saturday night.
