Tanks for the memories: Chisora and Farage met by Wilder intent before final curtain

Two hours before Derek Chisora and Nigel Farage rumble down Old Ford Road in a tank, an air of studious calm hangs above the hullabaloo of York Hall.
Several technicians bustle to and fro with purpose, as a DJ sets up his turntables near the double-tier stage that will host the evening's press conference.
Various melodies and genres waft across the Grade II-listed leisure centre, incongruously sewn together; Oasis, Survivor, even a flash of The Congos.
Adam Smith sits perched at one end of the main table, shufling sheafs of notes in his hands. Occasionally, his brow arches, Roger Moore-style, at the prose.

It is not lost on 'The Voice of Boxing' what the next three days may serve up, the sense of shifting wins above a heavyweight tide less concerned with belts.
There is a rarity to prizefighters calling time before they step into the ring for that last dance. Stars of this stature tend not to telegraph the final curtain itself.
Chisora is, in many ways, unlike the biggest stars of his era. He has never won a world title and his professional record reads more like that of a journeyman.
And yet, in several regards, he may leave a greater mark on the domestic heavyweight scene than those left by Tyson Fury, by Anthony Joshua and more.
Smith concurs. "I think what he's going to leave in British boxing is a void," he says, tone strangely wistful as he thinks. "I think people are going to miss him."
An unexpected relationship...
A belch of diesel rips through the air outside Bethnal Green tube station. For a moment, it feels as if the London Underground has burst through the asphalt.
Having already navigated Tower Bridge, Chisora's rush-hour joyride finds itself briefly trapped by a brace of double-decker buses in a contraflow on the A107.
The stoppage allows the few journalists jogging along the pavement to bark questions. A bald man on a bicycle asks Farage if he fancies an undercard spot.
Boxing loves its spectacle, and so too does the Reform UK leader. As their ride pulls up at the front steps, he finds himself mobbed by the flash of phone-rigs.

Chisora is seldom one to let the spotlight escape him too, though. He straddles the tank gun as he disembarks after Farage, drops a crude sexual quip or two.
The pair's friendship is a curious - indeed, perhaps baffling - bond. It is far from the first time that the pair have been spotted together, pulling personal duties.
Whether Farage extends his presence here to a seat at ringside on Saturday night at The O2 Arena remains to be seen. It would certainly set tongues wagging.
Amid the scrum, both men pose with Union Jack flags clasped between them, a handful of soundbites thrown back and forth amid the stream of prime photo-ops.
Then Farage is gone, seemingly whisked away to parts unknown - and with a snap of his shoulders, Chisora turns himself back to what is perhaps his final task.
...and a final rival
It is rare that Deontay Wilder is not the biggest man in the room. At his peak, the American could walk into any arena and stop 20,000 fans dead in their tracks.
At six-foot-seven, 'The Bronze Bomber' at least towers over everyone else in a literal sense. It is, oddly for a former world champion, all he seemingly has here.
'The Bronze Bomber' remains a showman too, a man still capable of the old razzle-dazzle. At a press conference with a little more edge, he gave as good as he got.
Chisora's entrance to the strains of The Highwaymen, complete with wide-brimmed cowboy fedora, felt like another little jab at his rival. Wilder was happy to reply.
"I don't have to be angry at you to fight," he spoke amid a lively back-and-forth. "I don't have to be angry to fight. I'll still whoop your ass. Bam, baby, goodnight!"
It is a promise that seemingly holds more purpose than the veteran has shown throughout the months-long prelude to this dance. It is the first inkling of true intent.
Chisora's natural response, typically unfiltered, pledged a one-round delivery straight to the canvas for his opponent. Again, his shoulders snap as he straightens up.
For so much of this build-up, for so much of the last year, these men have been characters. Even today, perched on a turret, there has been an edge of make-believe.
Two sleeps remain until the masks drop, and the men behind them are revealed on the canvas. Whether that defines the tale for good will be another matter to view.
As press file out into the evening air, an hour later than scheduled, Smith steps away from the podium where he has hosted this media event, brow still finely arched.
"I highly doubt it is his last fight," he admits. "If he wins, he will carry on. But if it is fifty and out, well, he leaves an extraordinary legacy. He's always value for money."
Chisora and Wilder undoubtedly have been. But nevertheless, that value has time upon it - and the world is almost ready to find out just what that is worth to each man.
