Rolly Romero was brimming with confidence heading into his clash against Gervonta 'Tank' Davis on May 28, 2022, in Brooklyn, NY. He was 13-0 with 12 knockouts. Romero wholeheartedly believed that he was the one to end the Davis mystique.
And for a while things were going Romero's way. He was controlling the fight on the outside by staying patient and using his jab. But Davis showed why he's one of the sport's best finishers by knocking out Romero in the sixth round. At the time of the stoppage, Romero was up a point on one scorecard, down one on another scorecard. So, he was in the fight that had been the biggest of his career up to that point.

Another big one looms on the horizon Saturday night from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when Romero puts up the WBA welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez, live on DAZN PPV.
Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) feels there were some missteps in the lead-up to the Davis fight, including the fact that he struggled to make 135 pounds and should have been competing at 140 pounds at that point in his career. Despite that, Romero accepts the setback. If he gets past Lopez and if Davis were to return to the ring, a rematch is something Romero doesn't seem to have much interest in because of one reason, and it's not him.
"If the fight's to happen, it's to happen," Romero told DAZN News. "But I have no interest really in fighting Gervonta Davis.
"I think he's definitely going to come back. I don't see him moving up to 147 to fight me. Maybe if I was still at 140, but I don't see him moving up to 147 to fight me."
Even though the result didn't go his way on that May night inside the Barclays Center and a rematch is unlikely to happen, Romero takes nothing away from Davis and his accomplishments.
"An amazing fighter," Romero admitted. "He's a great counterpuncher and all stuff. I can't take anything away from him."
