Why Jai Opetaia was stripped of his IBF cruiserweight title
Ultimate Tier: PPVs & 185 fight nights included

After what felt like an endless run of boxing politics, the IBF has finally decided Jai Opetaia's status as their cruiserweight world champion.

On Friday night, the IBF confirmed they would be stripping Opetaia of their world title ahead of his next fight on Sunday night.

Taking place at the Meta Apex, Opetaia will be making his Zuffa Boxing debut when he takes on American Brandon Glanton for the promotion's own world title at cruiserweight.

But why has the IBF taken the decision to strip the Australian? DAZN News explains.

IBF rules broken by Zuffa Boxing world title

The reason for the IBF's decision to strip Opetaia is because Zuffa Boxing is a sanctioning body which they do not recognise.

Therefore, the IBF had no choice but to make Opetaia-Glanton an unsanctioned bout and remove their world title.

In a statement released via Boxing Scene, the IBF confirmed their decision whilst citing their own rules.

“The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has withdrawn sanction of the optional defense of the IBF Cruiserweight Title between champion Jai Opetaia and #15 ranked contender Brandon Glanton scheduled for March 8, 2026.

“With sanction withdrawn, the Opetaia vs. Glanton bout is now an Unsanctioned Contest.

"IBF Rule 5.H. states in part - 'An Unsanctioned Contest is a fight which the IBF has not formally approved for sanction or where sanction has been formally withdrawn'.

"'If a Champion participates in an unsanctioned contest within his prescribed weight limit, the title will be declared vacant whether the Champion wins or loses the bout'.”

The only sanctioning bodies the IBF recognises are the WBA, WBC and WBO.

What does this mean for Opetaia?

In the build-up to Sunday's clash, Opetaia has not been afraid to keep mentioning his quest for undisputed.

However, with the IBF cruiserweight title no longer around his waist, the undisputed dreams are in tatters.

Opetaia still remains the Ring magazine's champion, which makes him the universally recognised number one fighter at 200lbs, but it remains to be seen whether winning the newly created Zuffa cruiserweight world title will add to his credibility and legacy.

Zuffa Boxing is only a few months old and their stance of not working with boxing's traditional sanctioning bodies has irked many within the sport.

Dana White's boxing venture creating world titles is the first step in their plans to become the sport's biggest promotion, but until more credible names join the roster and challenge themselves against the best, Zuffa will struggle to be boxing's big disruptors.
