'A modern-day Muhammad Ali' - Olaniyan on what makes Taylor an Irish sporting superstar
Taylor vs. Pili live on DAZN - TONIGHT

Tonight’s Croke Park spectacular is both a farewell and a passing of the torch.

For one final time, Katie Taylor will box in front of thousands as she calls time on a career where it’s felt like, with every passing fight, barriers have been broken, and women’s boxing has gone from strength to strength.

But it’s not just boxing; especially in the women’s code, where Taylor has been an inspiration, she has been one of, if not the biggest star in Irish sport for some time.

At one time, it looked like there was no one ready to follow in the footsteps of Taylor, but a whole new generation of Irish fighters are ready to step up, wave the flag and keep bringing big nights to the Emerald Isle.

Taylor is a modern-day Muhammad Ali

One of those is the exciting heavyweight prospect Adam Olaniyan.

The 20-year-old only made his professional debut in March, but three fights later, he is preparing for what is already the biggest night of his career, featuring on the undercard of someone he idolises.

When speaking to DAZN News, Olaniyan’s face lit up when Taylor’s name was mentioned, and he explained what she means not only to boxing, but to the country of Ireland.

“She’s a phenomenal advocate, not only for sport, but for Ireland,” Olaniyan said.

“I don’t think we could have asked for a better sportsperson to lead our nation, and when it comes to sport and boxing, how down to earth and humble she is.

“It’s not even a thing of her accomplishments and what she’s achieved, she probably has one of the best records achieved by a boxer full stop.”

One of Taylor’s personality traits which is always admired is how humble she is, and the time she gives to anyone and everyone.

Olaniyan stated that this is why she has become beloved by the people of Ireland and even labelled her “a modern-day Muhammad Ali”.

“She is the people’s champ, she’s probably like a modern-day Muhammad Ali where she will give you the time of day, she will not turn up her nose to you.

“That’s why she is so loved and respected by the Irish people.”

Olaniyan reveals best piece of Taylor advice

Managed by Brian Peters, who has also been instrumental in Taylor’s career, Olaniyan finds himself in a unique position of having a close relationship with a boxing pioneer.

It’s no surprise that Olaniyan has often sought advice from Taylor when beginning his own journey.

He does have aspirations of his own to become the standard bearer of Irish boxing and revealed to DAZN News the most important piece of advice he has received from Taylor.

“One of the first conversations I ever had with Katy, I just asked her, ‘How do you stay so level-headed’,” Olaniyan began.

“She just said it’s all about perspective, if you view yourself as a superstar and someone who is better than other people, you will start to believe that.

“But if you tell yourself that you’re a child of God, I’m not perfect, there’s still bits and pieces to improve on, and you look at yourself as a regular person, that’s how you will go on in life.”

Olaniyan may have only fought three times, all three of those being wins by way of knockout, but he is carrying this advice with him.

His media duties are grounded with a hint of confidence, and his likeable personality could make him a major star.

But for Olaniyan, Saturday night is not only his chance to be a part of history, it’s also an opportunity to pay homage to Taylor, who may have provided him with the tools to navigate the often chaotic world of boxing.
