Huge fights await if Mikaela Mayer can defeat Chantelle Cameron

Mikaela Mayer will look to add a third super welterweight title this weekend in Birmingham, England where she’ll unify with Chantelle Cameron.
The high stakes involved makes the bout major. However, a win and something far more impactful than Cameron’s WBO title could await Mayer — a life-changing fight with Claressa Shields.

The boxing stars have talked about fighting each other in the past, but the chatter is especially ramping up right now.
During an appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show” on Tuesday, Mayer explained how she’d move up to 160 pounds to challenge ‘The GWOAT’ and how she could present competition that Shields has never faced.
“Claressa has always been a very fast-paced, aggressive fighter,” Mayer began telling Helwani. “That’s why she dominates, especially at those higher weights. That’s what she does the best.”
Mayer added: “She’s quick, she’s aggressive and she lets her hands go. She’s a dog like that, but so am I. That’s my style as well. I feel like she’ll meet her match when it comes to that punch count and speed.”
Well, Shields caught wind of Mayer’s comments and took to her X social media account to respond.
Aside from each other, both Shields and Mayer have vocalized being interested in a fight with Lauren Price.
For Shields, the challenge would present two undefeated Olympic gold medalists facing each other as she recently told DAZN News.
For Mayer, who also owns the WBO welterweight title, Price’s IBF, WBA and WBC straps would represent the missing pieces to an undisputed reign at 147 pounds.
That being said, a possible all-American showdown between Shields vs. Mayer has enough growing heat to leapfrog anything else.
It would definitively decide whether Mayer could compete with 'The GWOAT' who has reigned undisputed in three different weight classes (super welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight).
The only other boxer to accomplish that feat is Terence Crawford who reached undisputed glory at super lightweight, welterweight and super middleweight. Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) must first defeat Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday night and convincingly.
Two weeks ago, on August 15, Shields overwhelmed Kaye Scott to snatch the WBA and WBC middleweight titles. And that was after enjoying undisputed glory at heavyweight.
Now, the onus is on Mayer to shine this weekend as well ... or any thought of her matching up with Shields could fizzle out.

Far too often, there is a prevailing thought that Claressa Shields lacks solid competition. Really it’s her superior sweet science skills that makes it look that way. If you need proof, peer into what happens to some of her recent opponents after they were beaten by ‘The GWOAT.’
Take Danielle Perkins for instance. Shields delivered a knockdown in the waning seconds of the 10th and final round to put an exclamation point on her unanimous decision victory over Perkins in their February 2025 heavyweight bout.
A year later, Perkins returned to the ring and produced a sixth-round TKO of Che Kenneally to grab the WBA light heavyweight world championship.
Also, consider Lani Daniels. After Shields defended her undisputed heavyweight crown against Daniels via unanimous decision in July 2025, the New Zealander eventually went on to stop Shadasia Green via ninth-round TKO this past April.
The resounding victory made Daniels the new IBF, WBO and The Ring super middleweight world champion. The win was also of note as Green felt like she could give Shields a proper bout before losing to Daniels.
All of this being said, Mayer believes she’d present a challenge to Shields that ‘The GWOAT’ has never faced. And she should feel that way.
Mayer, 36, has been an ultra sharp boxer, especially the past few years. I believe she did enough to have her hand raised, instead of the split-decision defeat verdict she received against Natasha Jonas in January 2024. And Mayer went on to look solid in outpointing Sandy Ryan twice and Mary Spencer thereafter.
An impressive Mayer win over Chantelle Cameron this weekend and we could keep the conversation going for a Shields vs. Mayer mega fight.
After all, it would present a high-level chess match, with the latter trying to prove she’s on the same tier as ‘The GWOAT.’
