Romero names fighter who 'hit with a cinder block' as his toughest opponent

On Saturday night, he will be defending his WBA welterweight world title against two-weight world champion Teofimo Lopez in Las Vegas, live on DAZN PPV, Ultimate Tier and Prime Video. 

This clash marks the end of an inactive 15 months following Romero's win over Ryan Garcia, the most notable victory of his career to date. 

Beating someone of Garcia's notoriety, it would be expected that Romero would capitalise and continue to build his profile, but instead, 'Rolly' needs to re-establish himself as a serious force on the world stage. 

Romero names the toughest opponent he's faced

Looking at Romero's 19-fight resume, there are a number of standout names including Garcia and the knockout artist Gervonta 'Tank' Davis. 

However, when it came to revealing the toughest opponent he's faced, it is a name who brought violence to the ring, and his punching power is something that has stuck with Romero. 

"Ismael Barroso hands down," Romero told DAZN News. "It felt like I was being hit with a cinder block, I don’t care what anyone says."

Romero and Barroso fought three years ago in Las Vegas. Barroso suffered two knockdowns before being eventually stopped by Romero in the ninth round. 

A year before facing Barroso, Romero faced another hard-hitter in 'Tank' Davis, but unfortunately for 'Rolly', he was stopped by Davis in round six. 

With Romero now a much-improved fighter since that defeat, a rematch against Davis has been suggested, but when asked whether it was a realistic possibility, 'Rolly' was not so sure due to the different weight divisions both men compete in. 

"Obviously, I’d want to get my rematch with ‘Tank’," Romero said. "But him fighting me at 147, I don’t think that would happen."
