Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez put their friendship aside on Saturday night when they locked horns with the WBA welterweight title hanging in the balance at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, live on DAZN PPV and Prime Video.
It was Lopez who showed up to fight all 12 rounds and beyond the fifth round, dominating with the jab and outboxing Romero to win by majority decision (114-114, 116-112, 115-113) to become a three-division world champion.
Don't let two of the judges' scorecards make you think the fight was too competitive.
Lopez (23-2, 13 KOs) stuck to the game plan in throwing the jab, going to the body and finding a home for the straight right hand. But the strategy nearly came apart in the fifth round when Romero's (17-3, 13 KOs) patented left hook wobbled Lopez. A follow-up right nearly sent Lopez to the mat, but he kept his balance and recovered.
From that point forward, Lopez went back to his plan of attack while Romero looked to be content on aiming just for the left hook that ended up not being there in the final 21 minutes of action.
DAZN News had live coverage of what happened throughout fight night below.
