Magnus Carlsen only needed a draw to become Esports World Cup Chess champion.
So, naturally, he sacrificed his queen after just 10 moves.
The world No. 1 produced one of the most eye-catching moments of the entire Esports World Cup during the decisive game of his final against Denis Lazavik, giving up the most valuable piece on the board as he closed in on the title.
It was a remarkable move in a remarkable tournament for Carlsen, who ultimately left Riyadh as the Esports World Cup chess champion.
But why did Carlsen sacrifice his queen, and how did the move help him secure victory?

Carlsen's queen sacrifice came on move 10 of the final game against Lazavik.
Playing with the white pieces, Carlsen opted for 10.Bxe6, sacrificing his queen as part of a sharp line in the opening.
To a casual chess player, voluntarily giving away the queen so early in a game might appear disastrous.
But Carlsen had not simply made a mistake.
The sacrifice gave him significant compensation for the queen and created a complicated position for Lazavik to navigate, despite the Norwegian only requiring a draw to secure the championship.
That context made the decision even more striking.
Rather than attempting to steer the game towards a safe draw, Carlsen was willing to enter a highly tactical position with the Esports World Cup title on the line.

Why did Magnus Carlsen's queen sacrifice work?

Giving up the most powerful piece on the board sounds like a huge risk, but Carlsen knew he would receive plenty in return.
After Lazavik took the queen, Carlsen immediately began attacking the exposed black king, forcing it across the board with a series of checks.
Crucially, the sacrifice also gave Carlsen significant material compensation. As the position developed, he was able to collect a rook, knight and pawns in exchange for his queen, while his remaining pieces were extremely active.
There was another reason the position suited Carlsen perfectly.
The known opening line offered White the opportunity to force a draw through repeated checks. Carlsen only needed a draw to become Esports World Cup champion, meaning Lazavik could not simply allow the repetition and had to take the risk of playing on.
That turned the pressure back onto the Belarusian.
Carlsen eventually emerged with a material advantage of a rook, knight and two pawns against Lazavik's queen, while also creating a dangerous passed pawn that Black could not stop.
Lazavik resigned after 28 moves, meaning Carlsen's spectacular queen sacrifice had ultimately produced something even better than the draw he needed: victory.
What is a queen sacrifice in chess?
The queen is generally considered the most powerful piece in chess, making deliberately giving it up one of the most dramatic decisions a player can make.
A queen sacrifice occurs when a player intentionally allows their queen to be captured in exchange for another advantage.
That could mean gaining several other pieces in return, creating a decisive attack on the opponent's king or reaching a position that is strategically favourable despite the material disadvantage.
Some of the most famous games in chess history feature queen sacrifices, but seeing one so early in a game – and with a major championship at stake – made Carlsen's decision particularly memorable.
How did Magnus Carlsen win the Esports World Cup?
Carlsen defeated Lazavik in the final to become the Esports World Cup chess champion in Riyadh.
The Norwegian completed an unbeaten run through the tournament and claimed the $250,000 first prize, while also earning 1,000 Club Championship points for Team Liquid.
The victory added another major honour to Carlsen's extraordinary career and came during chess' appearance on one of the biggest stages in esports.
And while there were plenty of memorable moments throughout his run to the title, sacrificing his queen after only 10 moves in the decisive game provided one of the most spectacular.
