Magnus Carlsen vs Nihal Sarin: Can the Indian star knock the world No.1 out of the Esports World Cup?

Carlsen has made an impressive start to the tournament in Paris, progressing directly through the upper bracket after victories over Andrey Esipenko and Hans Niemann.

His reward is a meeting with Nihal, who was forced to take the longer route to the last eight but survived two high-pressure matches on Thursday to keep his title hopes alive.

The matchup also comes with some history.

Nihal reached the quarter-finals at the Esports World Cup last year, only for Carlsen to end his run before going on to become the competition's inaugural chess champion.

Now the 22-year-old has another opportunity to produce what would be one of the biggest results of the tournament.

Who is Nihal Sarin?

Nihal is one of the leading players in a remarkable generation of Indian chess talent.

Born in Kerala in 2004, he became a grandmaster at just 14 years old and has since established himself as an especially dangerous player in faster time controls.

That skillset makes him particularly suited to the Esports World Cup format, where players have significantly less time to recover from mistakes than in traditional classical chess.

Nihal is representing Indian organisation S8UL Esports at the tournament and is one of two Indian players remaining in the competition alongside Arjun Erigaisi.

This is also not his first experience of the latter stages of the EWC.

Nihal reached the last eight in 2025 before running into Carlsen, making Friday's meeting an opportunity to avenge that defeat and reach the semi-finals for the first time.

How did Nihal Sarin reach the Esports World Cup quarter-finals?

Nihal's route to the playoffs has been anything but straightforward.

After dropping into the lower bracket during the group stage, he faced Chinese grandmaster Wei Yi with his place in the tournament on the line.

The opening two games were drawn, sending the match to an Armageddon decider.

Nihal held his nerve to eliminate Wei and advance to a decisive meeting with Poland's Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

Again, there was little separating the two players initially, with their opening game ending in a draw.

Nihal then won the second to secure the match and book his place among the final eight players at the Esports World Cup.

Carlsen's path was considerably smoother.

The Norwegian defeated Esipenko 1.5-0.5 before recording the same score against Niemann, allowing him to qualify directly for the playoffs without needing to navigate the lower bracket.

Can Nihal Sarin beat Magnus Carlsen?

Nihal could hardly have been handed a more difficult quarter-final.

Carlsen remains the benchmark in speed chess and arrived in Paris as the defending Esports World Cup champion.

He has done little so far to suggest that status is under threat.

The 35-year-old won both of his group-stage matches without requiring an Armageddon tiebreak and has already beaten one of the tournament's other major names in Niemann.

But the EWC format gives Nihal a chance.

Unlike the shorter group-stage matches, the quarter-finals are contested over four games, creating greater opportunity for momentum to shift over the course of the match.

Nihal has also already demonstrated his ability to perform under elimination pressure.

He survived an Armageddon against Wei before defeating Duda when another loss would have sent him home.

Perhaps most importantly, he knows exactly what awaits him.

Carlsen ended Nihal's challenge at this same stage last year. Twelve months later, the Indian grandmaster has the opportunity to turn one of the toughest possible draws into the biggest victory of his EWC career.

Who could Carlsen or Nihal face in the semi-finals?

The winner will advance to face either Hikaru Nakamura or Arjun Erigaisi in the semi-finals.

That creates the possibility of an all-Indian semi-final should Nihal and Arjun both produce upsets.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, Nodirbek Abdusattorov faces Denis Lazavik, while Alireza Firouzja takes on Niemann.

The quarter-finals will be played across four games before the format expands to six games for the semi-finals.

The Grand Final will then be decided through a best-of-three-set contest as the remaining players battle for the Esports World Cup chess title.
