On Sunday night, the No. 1-seed Colorado Avalanche became the first team in the Western Conference to advance to the second round with a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Good news for the Avalanche as their best player, Nathan MacKinnon, scored his first goal of the postseason on the power play in the opening period and an empty-netter to close out the game and series.
Late Sunday evening, the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in overtime on a goal by Ryan Poehling that the Oilers initially challenged, but NHL officials confirmed the goal to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Now, the two-time defending Western Conference champions are in serious trouble.
The Ducks get their attempt to clinch the series on Tuesday in Game 5.
After three intense games to start the series, the Buffalo Sabres gave themselves some breathing room in blowing out the Boston Bruins 6-1 to take a 3-1 series lead.
The Sabres came out firing with four goals in the first period and never looked back.
The Sabres can close the series out on Tuesday in Buffalo.
Brandon Hagel's second goal of the game was the game-winner at the 15:07 mark of the third period, giving the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens and tying the series up at two games apiece.
Hagel has six goals so far in the series to lead the Lightning and the NHL.
Game 5 occurs on Wednesday in Tampa.
