Airdrieonians relegated from Scottish Championship following play-off loss
Airdrieonians’ three-year stay in the Scottish Championship is over as they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Alloa in their play-off semi-final.
Alloa’s 1-0 first-leg victory left Aaron Taylor-Sinclair’s Airdrieonians’ with an uphill task, and even though Robbie Mahon scored after 56 minutes to cancel out Owen Foster’s 41st-minute opener, Calum Adamson struck with three minutes left to book the visitors a place in the play-off final.
Alloa will face League One rivals Stenhousemuir for a place in the Championship after they got the better of Queen of the South with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory.
A first-leg 1-1 draw was followed by another after 90 minutes, with Matthew Aitken’s early opener for Stenhousemuir cancelled out by Nicky Clark before extra-time drama.
Olly Whyte’s 103rd-minute goal had the hosts going through until Clark levelled again to make it 3-3 on aggregate, but Whyte scored the decisive spot-kick to fire Stenhousemuir into the final.
A brace by Oli Shaw sent Hamilton into the final of the League One play-offs with a 5-2 aggregate success over Forfar.
Hamilton’s 3-1 first-leg victory was backed up by a 2-1 home win as Shaw scored twice in the second half before Jake Sutherland grabbed a late consolation from the spot for Forfar.
They will take on Clyde in the final after Scott Williamson’s 66th-minute penalty earned a 1-1 draw at Spartans and a 3-1 aggregate victory.
It is honours even in the League Two play-off final after a 1-1 first-leg draw between Brora Rangers and Edinburgh.
James Anderson put Highland League champions Brora in front after 11 minutes, but Divine Iserhienrhien’s 44th-minute equaliser left the tie finely poised.
