Birthday boy Enrique lauds PSG's 'character' in advancing to Champions League final

The Parisians abandoned the all-out attack that was on display in last week's 5-4 victory over the Germans, which was the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie. Instead, they took to the pitch in Munich on Wednesday with a plan to stifle their hosts, and after scoring the first goal of the night in the opening minutes they were able to employ their tactics to near-perfection for the remainder of the match.

"We could leave the match with a lot of intensity," Enrique said after the final whistle. "The defence were better than the attack. The character we showed against a team like Bayern is so positive. We're so happy to reach a second Champions League final in a row.

"It was very intense. Very difficult. They play football at the highest level. Both teams are similar, we love to press higher. We are very happy."

The PSG manager, who led the Ligue 1 side to their first Champions League title last season, is looking forward to defending the crown at the end of the month against Arsenal. Enrique, who celebrates his 56th birthday on Friday, can think of no better gift than the opportunity to go back-to-back.

"In two days I'm going to celebrate my birthday," he said. "I'm very happy. We're in the next phase of the competition, the final of the Champions League. We want to give our supporters that kind of gift."
