Who's in England's last-chance saloon against Japan?

Friday's dismal draw with Uruguay answered some questions the Three Lions boss may still have over his selection, but with some of the regulars now back for the clash with Japan, it's a final time to assess his options. 

Nine of those options have already left the camp following the first game, with some possibly ruing their injury withdrawal, but which players are most needing to prove a point at Wembley?

Kobbie Mainoo

With Declan Rice and Adam Wharton no longer with the squad, Mainoo may get his chance in midfield alongside Elliot Anderson in England's engine room.

It will be the first start for the Manchester United man, and only a second appearance under Tuchel, having made little impression in a cameo on Friday night. 

Having already been part of a revitalised United team, the all-action midfielder needs to put in the same sort of display for his national team to put his name in the frame for a position that's getting more and more crowded. 

Tuchel highlighted James Garner's performance against Uruguay, so it means he may have already jumped Mainoo in the pecking order for a midfield World Cup berth, so he needs to pull out all the stops.

Jarrod Bowen 

The West Ham captain remains the only right-sided attacker left in the squad following Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke's departure back to North London and therefore Bowen would expect to start.

If he doesn't, it would already be a clear sign that he can book his holidays this summer. If he does get the chance, he really does need to put in his best display for the Three Lions so far. 

It feels pretty nailed on that the Arsenal duo are Tuchel's preferred options on the right flank, despite Bowen being a regular squad member under the German.

Time for the Hammers man to take his chance because it feels like now or never.

Nico O'Reilly

The fact that O'Reilly was included in the eleven players who were allowed to miss the Uruguay game suggests that he should have his passport ready for the summer. 

Yet, this is a player who still only has a handful of international games under his belt, and England's left-back position still looks like it's up for grabs.

Given we saw both Lewis Hall and Djed Spence on Friday, the assumption is the Manchester City man will start on the left on Tuesday, in what will be his final chance to confirm he's the man with the shirt. 

His ability to also play in midfield is another massive asset that could be exploited by Tuchel in the tournament.

Phil Foden

Unlikely to start given he played from the off on Friday, but it's fair to say Foden didn't do too much to press home his place against Uruguay. 

The number 10 role is a congested area for England, and with Cole Palmer showing in flashes what he can do once he replaced Foden last week, it's put even more pressure on the Manchester City star. 

Morgan Rogers is likely to start, so whatever minutes Foden does get at Wembley, they need to be memorable.

Because right now, it feels like he could be the major fallout in the race to be one of England's creative sparks in the States.
