Why are English players moving to Serie A after Spence, Inter developments?

Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers have made £100million-plus moves to Premier League giants, while Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have secured headline transfers despite being in their mid-30s.

However, one of the more intriguing developments has been around English players moving to Serie A, with John Stones the first Three Lions player to move to Inter Milan.

Trevoh Chalobah followed to Cesc Fabregas' Como, but he is unlikely to be the last after the latest news surrounding Djed Spence's future.

Djed Spence nears Inter Milan move

Following a statement World Cup, Tottenham's Djed Spence has understandably been in the spotlight, with Everton and Inter among the clubs reportedly interested in his services.

The full-back was always considered a bright prospect but finally found his feet in North London, with Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank showing faith in his ability and offering him a regular starting berth.

However, last season the 26-year-old was in and out of the side that narrowly swerved relegation, especially after Roberto De Zerbi arrived to salvage the club's campaign.

While a successful World Cup could have been enough for De Zerbi to convince Spence to remain with the Lilywhites, it appears he has played his last game for the club.

Spence landed in Milan in the early hours of the morning, with Fabrizio Romano stating that the two clubs had reached an agreement for an initial £26.9million transfer.

Why has Spence joined John Stones and Trevoh Chalobah in Serie A?

Stones' move to Inter made sense in many ways as he won the lot with Man City, and at 32, he still has time to make more history at a major European outfit.

As for Chalobah, he was regularly linked with the exit door during his mixed time at Chelsea, and the opportunity to link up with Fabregas at Como, a club on the up and in the Champions League next term, is one that clearly had great appeal.

Spence's move is not baffling, but it certainly falls into the more unexpected category, considering his age and the performances he produced over the summer.

However, if he had remained at Spurs, there would have been no guarantee of first-team football, with Pedro Porro the club's established right-back and Destiny Udogie De Zerbi's preferred option on the left.

The full-back was of interest to the Toffees, according to The Times, but given their lack of European football and underwhelming finish last season, it is easy to understand why that might not have appealed.

After all, Inter secured their 21st Serie A title last term, their third in six years, while they have finished runners-up in two of the last four Champions League finals.

Now Denzel Dumfries has departed for Real Madrid, there is room for a marauding full-back in Cristian Chivu's side, who are clear favourites for the league title yet again.

While he risks losing the regular attention of England boss Thomas Tuchel, if he can secure a starting place in Italy and lift regular trophies, then it could be the move that elevates his game even higher.
