Virgil van Dijk lauds 'a good three points' for Liverpool in Merseyside derby

The win allowed Liverpool to tighten their grip on fifth place on the Premier League table, which is currently the final guaranteed berth in next season's Champions League for English clubs. 

Van Dijk, who has won every major trophy on offer during his time with the Reds, hailed his side's resolve against their Merseyside rivals on Sunday, which marked Liverpool's first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. 

"Today was massive in the situation that we are, in hunt for the Champions League spots," the Liverpool captain told Sky Sports. "That is definitely not Liverpool-worthy, in my opinion, but it is the reality and it was important we got the win. I'm glad we did."

While the decorated defender takes no pleasure in his side's current position on the table, Van Dijk knows that there is still much left to play for in the remaining five league matches in the campaign.

"We've got five more games left against teams that are also fighting for the Champions League spots. Every game is a big one. Like I said, we are very disappointed as whole for the season that we're having because of the quality we have. It's below standards.

"But we have to keep fighting, keep going and make the best out of this poor season we're having. That's the reality, onto the next. Today was a good three points and next up is Crystal Palace at home, who we couldn't beat for many, many games before."
