There's an old adage in sports, 'Any team can win on any given day'. The magic gets into the bottle, tightened up, and away it goes for the ride. A couple of examples stand out, and one is currently the United States Men's Soccer after defeating Australia 2-0 in their second game of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The victory was the first time since the 1930 World Cup that the USA has won their first two World Cup games. Also, the USA has never clinched a spot in the Knockout Round with one game to go in the Group Stage. They lead Group D and will clinch first place if Paraguay wins or draws against Turkiye.
Watching this team, you see something completely different, led by the coach Mauricio Pochettino. Take Friday's game. Pochettino had a decision to make with Christian Pulisic missing the game. He inserted Ricardo Pepi, and the team really didn't miss a beat in pitching a shutout.
You watch them, and yes, the insane crowds make a difference mentally for the players on the field. It gives them an extra added boost, and sometimes it's just that little bit to get you across the line to victory.
But the players do make a factor. The hustle by Alex Freeman off a high deflection for the second goal to put the game out of reach for the US. Four years ago, that wasn't happening, and that circumstance wouldn't have been there.
People will read and say, 'Well, it's only two games. Take it easy'. Is that rhetoric wrong? Perhaps it is because there is a long way to go. But the eyes never lie. Everything is aligning perfectly for the US.
Look at the New York Knicks. They won the NBA Championship when many cast them off. Look at the Chicago White Sox in Major League Baseball. Two years ago, they posted a 41-121 record. Today, the 39-34 and in first place in the AL Central Division.
Destiny isn't just handed. It's everything coming as a whole in one magical moment in time. Right now, destiny appears to be on the side of the United States in the World Cup.
