Tactical analysis: How Spain's right-flank control exposed France's left side and delivered World Cup final berth

Spain's 2–0 victory over France in Dallas was built on sustained control and ruthless exploitation of a single defensive weakness.

Both goals in this World Cup semi-final emerged from the same corridor.

Spain's right flank, led by Lamine Yamal's direct running and Pedro Porro's overlapping movement, repeatedly targeted Lucas Digne and found the space they needed.

Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty at 22' and Porro's composed finish at 58' told only part of the story.

The full picture showed a Spanish side that dominated the central areas, denied France any creative rhythm, and turned their structural advantages into a clean sheet and a place in the final.

How Spain's right side became the release valve

Spain's attacking plan centred on isolating Digne in one-against-one situations.

Yamal's willingness to run at the French left-back created constant problems, and Spain fed that channel repeatedly throughout the first half.

The penalty stemmed directly from this approach—Yamal anticipated Digne's attempt to clear an aerial ball and positioned himself to win the contact inside the box.

Porro's goal followed a similar pattern.

After exchanging passes with Dani Olmo on the right side of the area, the full-back found himself unmarked behind Maxence Lacroix and finished calmly past Mike Maignan.

Yamal also had a goal disallowed for offside after again beating Digne for pace and cutting inside to finish.

Spain's right-sided overloads created their only two goals and their best disallowed chance, all from the same structural weakness.

Midfield control that suffocated France's creative link

Rodri and Fabián Ruiz dictated the match's tempo from the centre of the pitch.

Their positioning allowed Spain to dominate possession phases while limiting France's ability to counter effectively.

Michael Olise, deployed as the creative link between midfield and attack, found no space to operate.

Spain's double pivot pressed high when France attempted to build and dropped into compact lines when defending transitions.

France's attempts to play through the middle were consistently intercepted, forcing them wide where Spain's defensive shape remained organised.

Olise's struggles were so pronounced that Didier Deschamps withdrew him after the break, but the damage was already done.

Without a functioning link between midfield and the front three, France's attacking trio operated in isolation.

The defensive wall that protected the lead

Spain's backline neutralised France's most dangerous threat.

Pau Cubarsí's intelligent positioning and tight marking largely removed Kylian Mbappé from the contest.

The young centre-back anticipated through balls and closed passing lanes before France could find their captain in dangerous areas.

Mbappé was repeatedly flagged offside when attempting to run in behind and rarely received the ball in positions where he could hurt Spain.

Marc Cucurella made two match-defining interventions—a deflection that sent Mbappé's best effort grazing the post and a last-second block inside the box that preserved the clean sheet.

Spain's defensive organisation ensured that even when France committed numbers forward late on, the structure held firm.

The visitors' zero shots on target across the entire match reflected the extent of Spain's control.

What the scoreline revealed about the match pattern

Spain's 2–0 win accurately reflected the balance of the contest.

They controlled the central areas, exploited a clear structural weakness on France's left side, and protected their defensive shape with discipline throughout.

France's injury to William Saliba before half-time forced an early reshuffle that compounded their difficulties, and Deschamps' reactive substitutions could not change the fundamental tactical picture.

The match demonstrated that Spain's combination of midfield authority, right-flank penetration, and defensive intelligence was too complete for France to disrupt.
