The United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2–0 in their World Cup Round of 32 clash despite playing the final 26 minutes with ten men.

Folarin Balogun's 45' strike gave the hosts a deserved half-time lead before his dismissal transformed the contest's structure. What followed was a masterclass in defensive organisation against sustained pressure, with Malik Tillman's 82' free kick providing decisive insurance. Bosnia enjoyed prolonged territorial dominance after the red card but could not convert a single clear opportunity against a reshuffled American backline.

How the United States controlled central access in the first half

The opening 45 minutes belonged to the hosts through midfield dominance and patient possession. After an early spell of Bosnian pressure that produced two chances inside the first 12 minutes, the United States gradually suffocated space in the middle third. Tyler Adams dropped deep to create a back three during build-up phases, allowing the full-backs to push higher and stretch Bosnia's defensive shape.

This width created room for Malik Tillman and Weston McKennie to receive between the lines, recycling possession and drawing Bosnia's midfield out of position. Christian Pulisic drifted inside from the left flank repeatedly, pulling defenders with him and opening channels for Antonee Robinson's overlapping runs. The goal reflected this territorial control perfectly.

Bosnia were passing the ball in their own defensive third when Tillman recovered possession and released Balogun, whose finish with his left foot rewarded a half-hour of patient pressure. Defensive structure held despite the numerical disadvantage. Balogun's dismissal after a VAR review forced the United States into a defensive recalibration.

Rather than retreat entirely, the hosts maintained a compact 4-4-1 shape that denied Bosnia easy central access. Tim Ream and Chris Richards anchored the backline, winning aerial duels and organising the defensive line as Bosnia committed more bodies forward. Alex Freeman's positioning on the right side proved particularly important, tracking runners and cutting out crosses intended for the far post.

Matt Freese made saves from Ermedin Demirovic and Esmir Bajraktarevic during Bosnia's best spell of pressure, but neither effort truly troubled the goalkeeper. The shots came from predictable areas, straight at the keeper rather than into corners. Bosnia's numerical advantage translated into possession and territory but not into quality chances, with the American defensive block limiting shooting angles and forcing efforts from distance.

Set-piece execution punished Bosnia's attacking commitment. The tactical irony of the match arrived through a dead ball. Stjepan Radeljic's foul on Sergiño Dest gifted the ten-man United States a free kick in a dangerous position, and Tillman's execution was impeccable. His curling effort cleared the three-man wall and left Nikola Vasilj with no chance, doubling the lead at the very moment Bosnia had committed maximum numbers forward.

The goal exposed the risk of chasing an equaliser against organised opponents.

Bosnia's late chances told the story of their evening. Kerim Alajbegovic grazed the post in stoppage time, Ermin Mahmic curled two long-range efforts wide in the dying minutes, and Chris Richards blocked a shot before it could reach the goal.

Each opportunity represented Bosnia's best attacking moments, yet none troubled the scoreboard. The United States absorbed pressure, remained disciplined in its shape, and punished the gaps Bosnia left behind.

The 2–0 scoreline reflected both the hosts' first-half control and their second-half resilience, demonstrating that structural organisation can overcome numerical disadvantage when the defensive unit remains compact and the finishing remains poor at the other end.
