1966
England 2-1 Portugal
England's first-ever World Cup semi-final came en route to the national team's crowning glory in 1966.
Portugal were the obstacle Sir Alf Ramsey's team had to overcome to book their place in the tournament's final on home soil, and it's a game remembered for the genius of Bobby Charlton.
Charlton's two sumptuous strikes were enough to see off the threat of the Portuguese, despite a late goal from the tournament's top scorer, Eusebio.
It's seen as one of the midfielder's finest performances in an England shirt and booked the Three Lions' place in the showpiece against West Germany.
1990
England 1-1 West Germany (Germany win 4-3 on pens)
One night in Turin, where England fans were put through the motions and ultimately ended in a first heart-breaking penalty shootout defeat.
Andres Brehme put the Germans in front when his free-kick deflected off Paul Parker and fooled Peter Shilton in the England goal, but Gary Lineker equalised ten minutes from time to send the game into extra-time.
Amid the back-and-forth, Paul Gascoigne was famously booked, ruling him out of the final and leading to the iconic image of Gazza in tears.
There were more tears by the end of the night, too, as Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed from the spot to see West Germany progress to the tournament final.
2018
England 1-2 Croatia
It took another 28 years for England to reach the final four of the World Cup, as Gareth Southgate ushered in a new era with a memorable run in 2018.
The Three Lions got off to the perfect start when Kieran Trippier fired in a free-kick with just five minutes on the clock.
However, Southgate's men couldn't find that killer goal and were eventually pegged back in the second half when Ivan Perisic equalised and took the game to extra time.
