Inter Milan vs. A.C. Milan result: Late Eriksen strike seals chippy Derby della Madonnina

A scrappy Milan Derby was settled deep into stoppage time as Inter downed Milan 2-1 in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck early for Milan, hitting a low shot off the inside of the post in the 31st minute to give the Rossoneri the lead in what would eventually become a scrappy affair between the rivals. Ibrahimovic was at the centre of everything for his duration on the pitch, which was cut short when the Swede was shown his second yellow card of the game in the 58th minute.

Prior to receiving his marching orders, Ibrahimovic had been involved in a verbal sparring match with counterpart Romelu Lukaku. The duo were each cautioned late in the first half for an exchange of words that forced both teams to step in between them, with the imposing strikers continuing their confrontation while heading into the changing rooms at halftime.

Lukaku would have the last laugh as he scored a thunderous penalty kick just over 10 minutes after Ibrahimovic's departure, and he remained on the field for Inter's winner in the dying moments of the match.

With 10 minutes of stoppage time given due to a referee injury, Inter pressed relentlessly in order to avoid extra time. The Nerazzurri came close to ending it within the allotted 90 minutes, but it wasn't until seven minutes into added time that the game was decided.

When a foul was committed by Milan just outside the penalty area, substitute Christian Eriksen stepped up and delivered a stunning free kick into the top-left corner that left Milan goalkeeper Ciprian Tătăruşanu frozen in place.

The goal was late enough that a depleted Milan side had little time to mount a comeback, allowing Inter to claim victory and advance to the semifinal round.
