Bayern Munich's disappointment over being eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup was made all the worse by the serious injury to Jamal Musiala.
In a game that saw the Parisians secure their place in the competition's final four, thanks to a 2-0 win over the German champions, the post-match talking points centred on concerns over the German international.
The incident happened just before half time, when Musiala collided with a rash Gianligui Donnarumma rushing out from goal, and the 22-year-old suffered serious damage to his right leg.
So much so that the tackle stunned the stadium into silence as teammates rushed over to check on the forward, while Donnarumma could be seen in tears in the aftermath of the coming together.
What is Musiala's injury and how long will he be out for?
Musiala was forced to leave the field on a stretcher after the clash with Donnarumma and slow-motion footage of the tackle showed the extent of the injury after the collision.
It has since been confirmed that he suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula, and will now undergo surgery after flying back from Orlando to Munich on Sunday.
The club has set no time frame, but he is expected to be out for a prolonged period of time and will miss most of the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign.
"This serious injury and the long absence are a real shock for Jamal and all of us. This hits FC Bayern hard," said Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl.
"Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he plays for our team. Furthermore, the human impact is incredibly bitter; we all feel for him: Jamal has just recovered from an injury and will now be out for another long period.
"He will get everything he needs from us. We will support him intensively and be by his side, and we are already looking forward to him being back on the pitch."

Backlash over injury
Following the injury, Vincent Kompany is said to have been furious with the tackle, while Manuel Neuer called out Donnarumma for his 'risky' challenge on his teammate and criticised his conduct.
"You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It could even be a teammate," said Neuer.
"So I went over to him and said: 'Don't you want' - because it was half-time anyway - 'don't you want to go over there? Jamal is lying there, he'll probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's only right to go over there out of respect and wish him well and just say a little sorry.'
"After that, he went over to Jamal. Fairness is always important, and I would have reacted differently."
