It's safe to say John Aldridge was not a fan of the way Liverpool played under Arne Slot last season.
The Reds stumbled to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League in 2025-26 after claiming the league title a year prior, and Slot came under fire for his team's poor defence and uninspired attacking play.
Liverpool ultimately lost 20 matches across all competitions in Slot's second campaign in charge, the most defeats suffered by the club in a single season in over 30 years.
Unsurprisingly, the results cost Slot his job, and now the Reds are preparing for life under new manager Andoni Iraola, and former Liverpool star Aldridge believes the new man in charge could usher in more success — as long as some fresh faces are brought in.
"At this moment in time, with the current squad, I think the main aim will be to finish in the top four again," Aldridge told DAZN News on behalf of BetGoodwin. "If they manage to bring in a couple of marquee signings before the end of the window, then they could be in with a shout of challenging for the title."
"This season could be the start of a new era, and I think the fans will enjoy it a lot more than they did last season. Andoni Iraola will have them playing the Liverpool way. They won’t be so slow and losing momentum in their build-up play. It wasn’t great to watch last season.
"The Liverpool fans found it hard to take last season, watching their team lose games in the last minute, getting outrun by opponents and outworked. This season will have its ups and downs, but I’m pretty sure it will be a more enjoyable one.
"A lot could come down to whether they can get to January in a good position, because that is when a few of those injured players will return, and the squad will get stronger."
