Andoni Iraola confirmed: What will Liverpool look like under their new manager?

Liverpool supporters are still processing the shock of Arne Slot's departure, but Anfield could be about to witness one of the most fascinating tactical evolutions in the Premier League now that Andoni Iraola has been officially chosen to replace him.

The Spaniard has spent the last three years transforming Bournemouth from relegation candidates into one of England's most admired sides.

While comparisons with Jurgen Klopp are inevitable, Iraola is not simply a clone of Liverpool's former manager. His football is more chaotic, more direct and, in many respects, even more aggressive.

The defining feature of Iraola's Bournemouth has been intensity. Few teams in Europe press with such conviction. The Cherries have consistently ranked among the Premier League's leaders for high turnovers, pressing actions and direct attacks, looking to win the ball close to goal before attacking at speed.

Where Slot favoured control, possession and carefully constructed positional play, Iraola is far more comfortable embracing disorder. His Bournemouth side often sought vertical passes within seconds of regaining possession. The objective was not necessarily to dominate the ball but to dominate moments.

That distinction would make Liverpool a very different proposition.

The foundations are already there. Liverpool possess one of the league's most athletic squads and several players who appear tailor-made for Iraola's demands. Dominik Szoboszlai would likely become one of the biggest beneficiaries. His relentless running, pressing intelligence and ability to drive forward in transition align perfectly with Iraola's preferred style.

Ryan Gravenberch could also thrive. While Slot used him as a deep-lying controller, Iraola may encourage him to carry the ball more aggressively through midfield, turning defensive recoveries into immediate attacks.

Further forward, Hugo Ekitike appears almost purpose-built for an Iraola team. The French striker's willingness to run channels, attack space and lead the press would make him a central figure in the new manager's plans.

Defensively, Liverpool would likely become more front-footed. Iraola's teams defend aggressively, often leaving substantial space behind the back line in exchange for opportunities to win possession higher up the pitch. Virgil van Dijk's positional intelligence would help manage those risks, but Liverpool's centre-backs could find themselves involved in more one-versus-one situations than under Slot.

That may influence recruitment.

An additional centre-back with recovery pace would seem an obvious priority, particularly with Iraola's preference for compressing the pitch.

Athletic full-backs capable of repeated high-intensity sprints would also be valuable. Bournemouth's success under the Spaniard was built in part upon defenders who could attack and defend vast spaces.

Liverpool may also seek another dynamic winger. Iraola places huge importance on wide players who can threaten immediately after turnovers, attack isolated defenders and contribute aggressively without possession.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of an Iraola appointment, however, is not any individual tactical tweak. It is the prospect of unpredictability. Slot's Liverpool became one of the Premier League's most controlled teams. Iraola's Bournemouth became one of its most exhilarating.

At Anfield, with significantly greater resources and superior talent, that blend of elite quality and organised chaos could be devastating. Liverpool would not simply be replacing Slot. They would be reinventing themselves all over again.
