Could Araujo gamble be the move of the summer for Liverpool?

Araujo has joined on a season-long loan, with Liverpool paying no initial fee beyond his wages and retaining a non-compulsory €55million, roughly £47million, option to buy.

Given that Aston Villa reportedly wanted £60million for Ezri Konsa, this represents a wonderfully convenient solution to a defensive emergency involving injuries to Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni and new signing Jeremy Jacquet.

Barca goodbye 

The obvious question is why Barcelona were willing to release their captain so readily. The answer lies in a decline that has been surprisingly rapid. A serious hamstring injury delayed Araujo’s start to the 2024-25 season and Pau Cubarsi’s emergence reduced his importance thereafter.

Last term brought only 11 La Liga starts and 1,061 league minutes. He also took a mid-season leave of absence following his dismissal against Chelsea in the Champions League, another costly lapse in a growing collection.

That red card recalled his defining error against Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, when he was sent off with Barcelona leading the quarter-final tie by two goals. PSG promptly overturned it. For a defender whose game relies heavily on decisive intervention, Araujo has increasingly struggled to distinguish decisiveness from recklessness.

And yet Liverpool are not acquiring a faded veteran. Araujo is 27 and only three years removed from being discussed as one of the world’s finest centre-backs. He was central to Barcelona’s 2022-23 title win, when they conceded just 18 goals across 38 league matches.

Quick enough to defend huge spaces, powerful in contact and formidable in the air, he became particularly celebrated for his ability to smother elite attackers. Vinicius Junior once described him as the best defender he had faced.

Those qualities should travel well to the Premier League. Araujo can chase runners, dominate centre-forwards and rescue situations that appear to have slipped beyond recovery. He can also fill in at right-back, where Barcelona occasionally used him specifically to subdue dangerous left-wingers.

The perfect partner 

His shortcomings are equally familiar. He is not an especially imaginative distributor and can become hurried when pressed. His positioning is sometimes dependent on his recovery speed, while his instinct to attack danger has produced both spectacular defending and spectacular misjudgements.

This is where Virgil van Dijk becomes crucial. Alongside a defender with unrivalled authority, positioning and control of the line, Araujo will not be required to organise everything himself. Van Dijk can supply the calm and distribution; Araujo can provide the aggression and athleticism. Each man possesses precisely what the other now needs.

There are risks, particularly around Araujo’s fitness and temperament. But Liverpool have rented an elite physical talent for a year without accepting any obligation beyond it. If the old Araujo reappears, £47million for a 28-year-old centre-back already proven beside Van Dijk could look absurdly cheap. If he does not, Liverpool simply return him.

As gambles go, this one comes with the house’s money.
