Rashford’s Manchester United return is a reckoning

Marcus Rashford has spent 18 months trying to leave Manchester United. He now finds himself back at Carrington, attempting to force his way into a team constructed on the assumption that he would not return.
This may be the most important season of his career.
Rashford’s loans were hardly failures. He produced four goals and five assists in 17 appearances for Aston Villa during the second half of 2024-25, adding speed and directness before injury curtailed his campaign. Villa nevertheless declined a £40 million option to buy him.
Barcelona then offered the escape he wanted. Rashford scored 14 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions, including five in the Champions League, and helped Hansi Flick’s side win La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup. His title-clinching free-kick against Real Madrid was the sort of cinematic moment once imagined as routine when he first emerged at Old Trafford.
Yet Barcelona allowed their purchase option, worth approximately £26 million, to expire. They liked the player. They did not like the complete bill.
Rashford’s United contract runs until 2028 and, following the club’s return to the Champions League, is reportedly worth £325,000 per week.
That salary made sense when awarded in 2023, immediately after a 30-goal season. It has since become a barrier which his solid revival elsewhere has not been strong enough to remove. Barcelona could justify his contribution; they could not justify building it into their wage structure.
United have also changed. Michael Carrick led them to third last season and has several established attacking options.
Matheus Cunha occupies Rashford’s preferred position on the left, Amad Diallo offers creativity from the right, while Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko provide alternatives centrally. Rashford is not returning as the academy prince or even an automatic starter. He is a 28-year-old challenger whose last competitive United appearance came in December 2024.
Carrick has sensibly avoided continuing Ruben Amorim’s public war with the forward. He has called Rashford “our player”, while Harry Maguire described him as a “big asset” after his lively substitute appearance against Milan.
That warmer environment removes an excuse as well as creating an opportunity. Rashford must show he can press consistently, remain engaged without the ball and contribute when he is not given the space that best suits his game. Most importantly, occasional flashes can no longer carry him through months of anonymity.
Another productive season would restore the idea that Rashford belongs at the highest level, whether at United or elsewhere. Another uneven one would leave him approaching 30 with enormous wages, two years remaining on his contract and a shrinking pool of possible destinations.
Villa did not buy him. Barcelona did not buy him. United moved forward without him. Rashford’s task now is not simply to win his place back, but to demonstrate that the status and salary accumulated during his brilliant early years still bear some relationship to the player he has become.
