Who is Matthias Jaissle? The man set to replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle

The Magpies found themselves without a manager after Eddie Howe parted ways with the club less than a month before the start of the Premier League season, necessitating the search for a new man in charge.

Howe left following a five-year stint on Tyneside, where he delivered Champions League football and led the club to a first major trophy in 56 years when they beat Liverpool to bag the Carabao Cup. 

However, he came under scrutiny last season as the Magpies eventually finished 12th in the Premier League and were beaten in both Tyne and Wear derbies. 

Discussions with the board and reported disappointment over the sales of key players this summer led to Howe leaving the North-east, clearing the way for by former Al-Ahli boss Jaissle to take over.

Who is Matthias Jaissle?

Matthias Jaissle isn’t a name too familiar to most Premier League watchers. 

A former centre-back at Hoffenheim, the German started his coaching career in Denmark as assistant coach at Brondby, before earning his first top job at Austrian side Liefering.

There, he led the club to their highest-ever finish in the second division before moving to RB Salzburg, where he won a domestic double and led them to the knockout phase of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Since 2023, he has managed in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ahli, winning back-to-back Asian Champions League titles – the first manager ever to achieve the feat. 

However, he has never managed in a major European league, and his appointment feels very much a decision made at the top end of Newcastle’s ownership structure.

Was anyone else in the frame?

If reports are to be believed, several other names were linked with the Newcastle post. 

Former Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna is a free agent and was linked to the job, with other names like Antonio Conte, Xavi and even Gareth Southgate making the rounds.

The job ultimately went to Jaissle, who now has very little time to get up and running before the new season, with a squad depleted by big-name sales and now facing severe unrest from the stands.
